15 days PTO is bare minimum in our industry. It would be insane to not take at least that. 4-6 weeks more reasonable if you're delivering well.

HR research says 5 weeks should be standard. Unlimited PTO means your company doesn't have to carry PTO as a balance sheet liability. It pays them more than it pays you. Take advantage of it. If your manager says you are a slacker then tough for them! Its unlimited with approval. They would have to approve it - they gotta say no. 

Trump said that they were going to do sector tariffs but it hasn't happened yet. Last night he introduced movie tariffs. There is no way to tall what's going to happen if he just keeps making it up as he goes. And, of course, he could just rip up a tariff deal if he changes his mind a day after signing it.

No you didn’t make a mistake. I always think of it like this: time is ticking away. Being at work non stop is not it.

Counter advice: if you’ve just got your first $20k to build you brand/web/app please for the love of god do NOT spend $10k of it on a copywriter.

A good copywriter can absolutely make your product feel professional, but blowing half your budget on a tagline is a recipe for disaster. A lot of things contribute to success, and focusing on one tiny part is like focusing on a single tree in the forest

It’s not feasible, they will never materialize.

It's impossible to price in because it's unpredictable.

After about a year, a friend called out to offer me a job similar to the one I retired from. It paid well, was a fun company, in my wheelhouse. But it turns out I like being able to do anything… or nothing in particular.

The market is underreacting to everything.

Senior copywriter here - no one reads the copy. Well, google reads the copy, so you might as well just have AI write it. Devastatingly sad. Switching careers.

Many interview candidates don’t know is the thing. They can talk well about what projects they’ve been on “I boosted the efficiency of the microservice by 72.146%, saving us 5252.63$/29.42 day rolling period.” Or “migrating to pulsar and implementing a neural coral decision engine in spark….”. But also they can’t code.

I think one can over-focus on syntax and coding in the interview but it also is done to filter out people. I expect it in the first round or two of interviews. But not in the latter rounds.

Don’t forget there’s also survivors bias in these stories. I know several people who moved to Arizona, etc during the pandemic but had to move back because finding remote work became challenging. You have to have a relevant skill set and also be good at interviewing remotely to be picked from other competitive candidates. You seem to be a rock star at that. Congrats.

The property prices in those locales post pandemic reflect that your story may be an exception.

In my experience if the 1st 100k took 10 years then getting to a million will take 10 more. Sounds like you did it in less than 10. It's all downhill from here. Awesome job!

I’m 54, trying to reinvent myself in the job market, but it feels like I’m swimming through a sea of fake jobs. Modern job boards are full of listings that seem more like traps than real opportunities.

After being struck by the growing list of companies who are suspending guidance, I started researching today how it compares with the early days of the pandemic. As stated in the post title, the number today (i.e. ~~35~~ 38 companies) is equivalent to the amount 3 weeks into the pandemic. (in total, the pandemic ended up with over 800 companies suspending guidance.) While suspending guidance isn't a straight up indicator of a recession, the surge in guidance suspensions across multiple sectors, especially among large-cap or economically sensitive companies, is a strong warning sign of economic distress.

The number of companies suspending guidance since 4/1 is the same amount as 3 weeks into the pandemic

Thank you for everyone's kind advice! Just to update, I scheduled a 1:1 with my boss, explained my situation, and it went so well! He's a tough guy, but he cried in front of me, which caught me off guard 🥹, so I cried too. Then I set up a meeting with HR, they're helping me with all the paperwork to put me on Compassionate Leave for 12 weeks! My last day will be Wednesday next week. That means, I'll fly to Asia one week after my dad's flight, and spend the whole summer there with him.

Another update, I'm recently accepted to a medical program, specialized in cancer, it was so competitive. I want to have a more fulfilled job, after seeing my dad and many people fighting cancer, I studied hard while I was working full-time. I'll complete all the mandatory certificates during the summer, and I'll quit my job to pursue studying!

P/S: The company is in the process of hiring somebody already. My company is like Amazon (where I'm a software dev, 1 out of 1,000 people in one department, people come and go), so they don't care much about if they have extra/less people in the team. For them, the more people the better. My boss told me if I decide not to come back after 12 weeks, it's ok too. But if I want to come back, "work will always be ready for you"

I understand that FIRE is a privilege and that it is not actually paycheck to paycheck. 

I'm wondering if it is normal on the FIRE journey to increase your savings rate to the point that you hit that "check to check" feeling where you have little money leftover every month. I'd like to increase my savings rate, but for some reason the idea of having nothing leftover concerns me. I do have an emergency fund. 

Is this correct? 

Is it normal to save so much that you feel “paycheck to paycheck”?

I’m 18 and looking to start a serious business with a budget of $50K–$75K. I’m not interested in quick flips or side hustles. I want something solid and long-term. Ideally, a real business with a physical location, employees, and room to scale into something valuable over time.

I’m open to service-based businesses, logistics, local franchises, or anything with strong demand and growth potential. I don’t mind if the business isn’t flashy, as long as it’s serious and profitable.

If you’ve started something like that or have ideas, I’d really appreciate your input.

What’s the smartest business to start today with $50k–75K?

Always make sure to get a written offer, not a verbal one.
 
I bought a new EV. I was trying to sell my ICE (16 Accord). The 1st dealer from whom I wanted to buy the EV offered 8k. I asked them to check the car while I test drove.
 
I had already googled the basic value of my car, and I knew it should be in the range of 10 to 12k. I told the dealer that's too low and I will take 10k with the incentive deal they had (1k discount for trading in). He said no.
 
I went to CarMax, they gave me a 10k estimate. Same for Edmund and Carvana.
 
The best way to get the max seemed to be the KBB. They don't buy the car outright like CarMax and Carvana. They have dealerships that they connect you with. KBB offered $12k.
 
Dealer one (Ford) just looked at the car, didn't even check under the hood, or test drive it. Gave a 12k verbal offer. I asked for a written offer, and he said we don't do that. I knew it was BS, so I just said OK and moved on.
 
Dealer two (Honda) gave me an 8k offer. I told him KBB has it at 12k, I have other offers at 11k from a dealer across from them (fake it till you make it). 15 mins later, he gave me a revised offer at 11k.
 
Dealer three (Hyundai) wouldn't check my car until I was willing to actually sell my car. I told him I can't sell it now as I have to 1st buy a car, otherwise I won't have a car to go to work. They said, buy the CSR and come back.
 
Dealer four (Jaguar) is the best dealership I have ever gone to. No wait time. The lady came by and asked me to sit at her desk. Took my keys, had someone test drive it, and check the car. 30 mins later, gave me a written offer of 11.1k, good for 7 days. Didn't upsell me or anything.
 
Bought my new car, went back to Jaguar, and told them I am ready to sell my ICE. They took a total of 20 minutes to sign the paperwork, and it was all done.

If you are in the market for a new car, do not just trade in your old car to the same dealer.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a Henry who can have the rich lifestyle and FIRE at the same time.

However, the original concept of FIRE was ordinary income people being smart with their money so that they could retire early.

I’m irritated at the number of incidents where someone with a Middle Class income will try to celebrate reaching FIRE, through sacrifice, frugality, minimalism, or over employment, and get dragged by some HENRY saying that they didn’t need to make sacrifices to retire and OP wasted their life.

It basically pushes all the Middle Class people out of the main FIRE subreddit.

Also it’s a show of bad social skills.

People who call their $100k salary "peanuts" have no idea

Growing up poor makes me appreciate where I am now. A fellow colleague makes nearly $100k/year but calls it peanuts and chump change and says her husband makes many multiples of that per year. 

Another person I know makes over $300k/year and constantly complains how undervalued he is. He spends a good amount of his time browsing wikipedia at work since he actually only has a couple hours of work a day.

I am not making $100k/year, but I feel like I am fantastically rich compared to how I grew up. 

My vent is how out of touch people can be with their perspective on wealth and how hard life truly can be.

How can people be so naive?

So I’ve been hearing the same thing over and over again: “No one is hiring,” “The job market is dry,” “Even juniors with experience are getting ghosted.”

But then I go on job boards, LinkedIn, or even clearances-focused sites, and all I see are software engineering roles — many of them remote or requiring a security clearance. It’s making me wonder:

Are companies just posting jobs without actually hiring? Or are they hiring, but just being extremely selective and slow about it?

I’m asking because I’m literally just starting my journey into software engineering and will most likely have 4 YOE by the time I even graduate. So while this may not impact me right now, I’m trying to understand the landscape and where the demand actually exists.

For those actively applying or on the hiring side — what’s the real deal in the market right now?

Nobody is hiring but yet all I see are SWE job postings

So I'm 14 years old, and I have a 4.0 GPA, and I'm currently taking Honors Geometry, and will be taking AP Calculus 3 by my senior year of high school, and will be taking 4 college credit plus classes by the end of high school, finishing with over 30 high school credits. I went to a career center today and they taught us about things in the engineering field and I was intrigued by welding, and also pretty interested in architectural engineering and construction. I told my dad that i was interested in welding, but he said that my level of education and grades should allow me to strive much higher. I'm very uncertain about my future careers, and I don't know if I should seek out a better job in the engineering field. I've gone on a trip in Appalachia where I helped for about 5 days in house construction, such as roofing, and installing a window, and those days were a very very enjoyable week for me and I would love to do something similar in the future. Should I go for a career in welding and possibly house construction, or should I go for something better?

I've seen a handful point to pricing it in (Apple, $900MM although I'm not sure everyone saw that was for the single month of June... and Ford with their $1.5 BN projected hit) although seems the majority are holding guidance as-is or simply declining to provide guidance. 

Given the consumer hasn't yet felt the pinch of tariffs working their way through the system cost-wise, nor have businesses and consumers fully felt whatever shock may (or may not) come from supply chain disruptions, I can't help but wonder if today's market has priced all of that risk in given the rapid rebound. 

Context, I have another 5-10 until "retirement" so maybe my perspective is just different. Looking for thoughts from the group here, I am far from advanced but the question is nagging me.

I’ve been digging into the recent EU tariffs on U.S. tech imports announced last month (March 2025), and I’m wondering if the market is underreacting. Major U.S. studios like Warner, Disney, and Netflix have long relied on Canadian cities like Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal as production hubs due to lower costs, generous tax credits, and proximity to the U.S. border. 31F, started working since 23 years old. Just doing my math yesterday and I realized that I have $103k invested now including all retirement, brokerage, and HSA accounts. On top of that I have my emergency fund in HYS and a mortgage with 35% equity in. Feel excited about this achievement.

Financially pretty separate with my partner. If I want to Coastfire, it would be less than 10 years. But I do plan on having kids so we'll see how the whole thing plays out.

Hit the 100k milestone

I am 56, wife is 58. I posted earlier this year about whether I could retire based on my financials. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, so I actually did it! Last day at work was a few weeks ago. Now, I know it's going to take some time to develop a new routine and get used to things, but I am enjoying it so far (still the honeymoon, I know). I may look into some part time work and/or consulting gigs in the near future but haven't really thought about it much yet. All in good time.

Although I am liking the freedom and relaxation, I do feel a bit strange. It almost feels like I am cutting classes in college, and I am heading for a lot of trouble at exam time. I also feel a bit uncomfortable around others who are older than me and still working. There is a strange awkwardness as they "sorta-kinda" congratulate me, but I have a feeling they may be judging me harshly and think that I am being reckless. I know I shouldn't care, but people are social creatures and everyone wants to feel validated.

I am looking to hear from others who got off the merry-go-round in their mid-50's like me. How long did it take to get used to being retired? Did you go through the "weird" period I described above? How did you deal with the second-guessing of your decision? Any and all words of encouragement or advice are welcome. Thanks>!​!<

Just retired early at age 56.  Wondering if I made a Mistake?

I recently had an interview where most of the questions were just basic syntax-related—stuff like language-specific quirks or exact method signatures. It felt more like a pop quiz than a conversation about my experience or problem-solving skills.

I've been working as a developer for more than 12+ years, handling real projects, debugging complex issues, and making architectural decisions. But none of that seemed to matter in the interview—it was just "what’s the syntax for X?" or “how do you write Y function?”

Honestly, in real development work, I look things up when I forget syntax. Isn’t that normal?

Just wondering—why do so many companies still treat interviews like memory tests instead of evaluating actual experience and practical thinking? Anyone else frustrated by this?

Quick update from us—original post is pasted below (June 2023).

Shortly after my wife and I moved from San Francisco back to our home town of Minneapolis, my company announced a mandatory RTO policy like we feared could happen… It was stressful for a couple months, but fortunately, I was able to land a new fully remote role at a Bay Area company soon afterward. Things ultimately worked out better than expected—between the two of us, we now earn much more than before (about $1.6M / year), and we’re saving around $600K annually (Minnesota taxes are almost as high as California!).

Our liquid net worth is up to $7M now, with a $1.15M mortgage on the house (4.5%). Our revised FIRE goal is $8M with the house paid off, so we’re likely to hit that in the next 2-4 years assuming the market holds up.

The biggest delta from our original post is we bought a historic 100-year-old house in a beautiful neighborhood for $1.5M and spent about $800K doing deferred maintenance and renovating it at a very high quality. Big splurge, but we love it :).

Not sure if we will actually retire in 2 years since we’ll only be 35 years old (I was mentally prepared to work until 40); we might just continue to work while the jobs are fun and slowly grow our vacation and discretionary budget in proportion to our net worth after crossing our baseline threshold…

Overall, I’m a glad we were encouraged to pull the trigger and move back. We see family regularly, we’re making new friends, and we’re really glad we didn’t wait to get our lives started in what will hopefully be our final big move.

Lessons learned:
- I’m much less stressed now that I’m close to family. Seeing my niece regularly was everything I hoped it would be.
- Minneapolis is a genuinely great place to live. We live in a top tier neighborhood and home whereas in California we had to make comprises.
- It’s fun making new friends, especially since we know we’ve put down strong roots here.
- I was definitely undervaluing my skill set at my former gig. I got multiple full remote job offers at much higher pay. I should have looked sooner…

Hi r/fatfire community,

My wife and I are considering moving back home to a MCOL/LCOL city from a VHCOL (San Francisco) city to achieve Coast FIRE later this year. We’re both 30 years old (hoping to retire at 40), and our parents’ health is declining quickly, so we want to be closer to them while their health is still good. We also want to be back to see our niece (7 y/o) and younger cousins grow up.

We have a liquid net worth of $5.5M, with an additional $400k in home equity (I got lucky with some startup equity in 2021, have since diversified and moved companies). With a 3% withdrawal rate, we would need $6.5M with a paid-off house to cover our expenses and taxes (aiming to hit $7.5-8M so we can buy a house in the $1.2-1.5M range).

Both of us are approved to work remotely at our respective companies: her income is $200k (healthcare), and mine is $550k (big tech company), with an annual spend of $275k.

However, we’re concerned about the job market in Minneapolis (the city we have in mind), which isn’t a tech hub. The only high-income roles available to us would be remote work.

We would like to get feedback from the community if our plan to move back is prudent given the job market or if there are any other things we should consider. (I’m hoping a discussion about my wife and my situation is useful to the general community).

[2 year Update] Moving from VHCOL to MCOL for family

I've been building brands for 15 years. If you just got your first $20k-$100k budget to build your brand/web/app, let me humbly offer you a tip:

# In 2025, the #1 thing that will affect how 'pro' you look - is your copy. 

Every website has amazing templates - which turn butt ugly the second you put in your long rambling copy in it, trying to fit every keyword or value prop. 

Every hero image looks beautiful, until you put in a 3-line headline that doesn't actually say anything.

Please please please hire a copywriter. Pay the most expensive one you can find. You will be shocked to think you might pay someone $10k to write 10 words. That is not what they are doing. They are purposely *not* writing 10,000 other words - they are purposely turning your steaming pile of 100 words into 4. That is what you're paying them for. When they give you options, ask them what they think is best, and then GO WITH THAT ONE. Accept that you yourself likely have no gauge on what is good or bad copy, and it is almost always the case that the edits you suggest will make it worse, not better.

Your copy changes how words flow on your site. It changes how big cards on on your site. It changes how good that CTA button looks to click. It tells me if you've used AI to spit out the same thing it spit for someone else. It changes how much brain energy people use to consume your site. It changes whether or not they know what you actually do. It changes how they feel about you. 

I'm not a copywriter - please go find yourself an amazing one, someone you can explain your business to and you believe them when they tell you they 'get it', and then trust them with your business.

Here are my runner ups for things that make a site/brand look un-pro that is quickly solvable:

\- Find a creative director to decide on your stock photography. Every little thing matters in a photo. Lighting communicates something. How "beautiful" and "ugly" the people in your photos are communicates something. Whether or not the framing of the photo fits your website layout communicates something. It is okay to spend 30% of the stock photography budget on the license and 70% on the person who is choosing it. Do not choose your own photos. Do not offer your own opinion. 

\- Find someone to pick an custom icon set for you that is consistent and actually works with your brand. There's a reason why there are 500+ versions of the map pin, because they are all a little different and communicate something a little different. Can you tell me what that difference is? Most people can't, but they still feel it, which is why all 500 versions of those are in use somewhere. The worst is seeing a website with icons sets that are obviously designed for different visual styles, or ones that are way too literal, or ones that don't make any sense at all. Even if you pay someone to pick the right set of free icons for you, that is worth it.

  
The common thing with all three of these tips is not just that 99% of people are not good at doing these things (copywriting, choosing photography, choosing icons), it's that 99% of people are completely unaware (and will never be aware) of how bad they are at doing these things. They will continue to make decisions, or override professional decisions, that in the moment they feel conviction about, but then when the project is done, they will step back and wonder why it never looks as 'pro' as the competitors.

The best part is that if you are a small startup, you can invest in these three things, take a step back (hardest part) and let the pros do the work (just filling in your Squarespace site), and you will often end up with something that looks more pro than the company that paid 10x to an agency but decided to intervene constantly and not follow advice.
