Remember to factor in property taxes, insurance, and repairs. Things break in houses and you have to fix them.  There are always surprises so you shouldn't fully tap yourself out.

If they gave you a quote with a list of materials and you agreed and then they used a different set of materials without discussing it with you then I don’t see how this is your problem.   This is their problem.  I would pay the original price and no more.

If citizens can barely get hired they're def not gonna sponsor visas for comparable candidates. Amazon even last year during the layoffs gave the money they were gonna pay for  to new intl student grad hires, and gave it to the citizen grads when they delayed their start. I assume youre gonna get fucked over every step of the way sadly.

The American officials and leaders of many other countries are nervous because Chinese industrial overcapacity could flood foreign markets at cheaper prices. Meaning, diplomats fear their native companies will be decimated by Chinese overcapacity and are erecting walls to protect themselves.

Whereas Consumers only see cheaper Chinese prices and are not thinking long term enough to understand what this would really do to their domestic economy/communities. So they see protectionism as bad.

Yeah, I think it’s going to be awhile before companies consider sponsoring visas again. The large tech company I work for isn’t sponsoring visas at all right now. Every opening has so many applicants who are authorized to work in the US that it doesn’t make any business sense right now.

If you have that estimate in writing and they didn’t disclose the change before proceeding you have enough to get them to honor the original pricing. They should eat the cost difference.

10 on sites means you need to keep working on your interview skills. If it was actually about experience then you would get screened before the onsite. Maybe find some people do to mock interviews with and get some real feedback

Figure that out, and figure out what you need to make to meet it. If he makes 150k, you may be able to cut your comp and stress in half and be fine.

He doesn’t need to walk away for you to be able to quit. You don’t need permission to be happy either. You have ENOUGH. Not necessarily in financial assets for you to do nothing, but your skills are enough to allow you to build a happy life.

Junior level positions are the gatekeeper to this industry. And they are very few in number.

That’s why people on this sub hard regurgitate BS in CS and internships. Everything else is extremely luck base and you can end up wasting years

I'm still in my first job. Been here 8 years. I've had multiple opportunities to leave but I haven't for a few reasons.



I make good money. I've doubled my salary over these years and I make good money for a chemistry degree which is a traditionally low paid degree.


I have lead responsibilities. I've accumulated leadership roles and promotions inside of a huge and respected company. They're real and documented and bolster my resume well.


I'm almost fully autonomous. I check in with my management but they're very hands off. This is just a mutual trust thing. But I work my hours when I want to and as long as stuff gets done they stay hands-off. The only people I've seen with the autonomy I have are 30 year employees with PhDs, and those are the colleagues I work with the most. It's kinda neat 😄


I enjoy my work. I'm in a lead position in one of the best places to do what I do. I'm constantly innovating and experimenting and they encourage it because I save them money and do cool stuff.

Imagine your mortgage goes up $100/month next year due to taxes and insurance. How do you feel about that

Companies only sponsor international students when there a shortage of applicants and/or cheaper applicants. Right now there's a surplus of experienced people looking for work with domestic experience who are willing to work for less so there's no reason to go through the extra expense and work of hiring foreigners.

There's one caveat, they'll probably sponsor someone who's a a specialist with a very niche skill set

You should be able to leave your job, but speaking as someone who had a startup and did have a successful exit, if I were him, I'm not sure I could truly forgive you if you pushed hard for me to give up on it/not see it through.

Maybe you guys should approach it from the perspective of: if I leave my job or take a lower paying job, how can we restructure our lifestyles to make it work financially?

Startups are fickle. Sometimes things look utterly hopeless, but then a spark catches fire and you discover your company's true market and true purpose. A year is a decent amount of time to be able to try things out and discover what does and doesn't work.

One of the greediest industries is laying people off, color me shocked.

The issue is that the "overcapacity" is created by government subsidies targeted to develop these industries in China which will eventually disappear. China is not even cheap to manufacture in anymore and even Chinese corporations have been offshoring to SE Asia since at least 10 years ago. I used to work in manufacturing and now work in private credit financing for AxJ companies. Anyone telling me that Chinese companies are more efficient has got to be delusional. Governments spend money on whatever the party tells them to at the time. Even Chinese people living in China prefer to drive Japanese cars than Chinese ones for a reason.

It will go up every year. Also factor in all the household bills before deciding

I stayed with the same organization for 18 years. I was promoted 3 times, and every time I went looking elsewhere or was contacted by a recruiter, nothing had better pay or environment.  I did eventually move on, but I don't regret staying as long as I did.

Not completely related to investing, but if you want to read more about this I'd suggest the excellent Michael Pettis book Trade Wars are Class Wars, or the somewhat less well written book by Bob Lighthizer who might be the next treasury secretary.  

It does make sense for less developed countries like China to focus on building industrial capacity over domestic consumption, that was what the US did back in the late 18th and early 19th century.  It also makes sense for countries like the US to avoid trade policies that strengthen strategic rivals at the expense of national and economic security.

I'm in my mid 30s, also in tech, and my total compensation is just a bit higher than yours. Like you, I'm so extremely burnt out these days that I can't keep going. In fact, I've finally reached the point where I've decided to resign (last day in 4 weeks) to begin a much-needed year-long sabbatical. My wife has taken some detours in life and is still working on her undergraduate degree. Our NW is over $2 million, contributed entirely by me (literally 100%). She is soon to start a job that will barely make $80k and we live in a VHCOL area. Needless to say, we'll be net negative while I'm off work. When work stress peaks, which it often does, I admit I do sometimes feel a tinge of resentment about our situation. However, she never compelled me to pursue a high paying job; she's actually always encouraged me to take it easy and scale back. So, if I'm overextending myself, it's really self-driven.

I believe that if your partner shares your financial goals, it makes sense to agree on a strategy and for both to contribute a comparable amount of effort. However, it's important to be honest about whether this is actually the case. Sometimes, one person simply desires more, or wants or is ok with something different (pursue a startup that may or may not be financially optimal), and it's unfair to impose those aspirations on someone else and expect them to invest equally to achieve them.

Take Two probably has many, many games/studios under their umbrella. I’m not sure this news directly translates to less developer resources on GTA6.

I’m at a small startup that had a successful fundraising round and we are seeing piles of big tech resumes applying for the positions we’ve posted.

I know we aren’t paying their old salaries, but it’s still a tech salary, it’s not like going and working for a university. And our culture is nice.

It’s an amazing time to be hiring really. Last year the best candidate they could find for a senior fullstack role was a goofy self-taught drop-out (hi!) with only consulting experience, and now we’re getting incredible talent.

I think this is all gonna fix itself, but the days where you can earn what a doctor makes by getting really good at JavaScript are probably over.

This is a numbers game and 20 interviews is pretty great in that timeframe and in this market for a junior. Since you didn’t convert any of those into jobs you should instead look into how you interview to determine why you didn’t get the job.

I am hearing estimates of \~9000 employees total being laid off, a lot of them being SWE and financial folks.

I graduated in Summer of 2023 with a business degree. I’ve been applying for jobs since December of 2022 on a daily basis. My first interview with a company was in January of 2023, and I went to the final round and got rejected. After that, the only other interview I got was 2.5 months ago for a role that I was referred to and I’m still waiting to hear back. I did every fucking thing right: I got referred, had the qualifications, completed 3 fucking rounds of interviews, and I haven’t gotten a response back. Then, I get an email 3 weeks ago saying I’m a top candidate, however they’re looking to close the position I interviewed for and they had the nerve to ask if I was still interested in the position. Then I followed up with an email last week with no response. 

What the fuck is going on? I’m getting furious about finding a job. I’ve literally applied to over 2,000 jobs, spoken to well over 200 recruiters, and I’ve landed NOTHING. I’ve done everything, networked with people, spoken to friends and family about positions at their companies, recruiters, etc. just haven’t landed shit. 

What the fuck is wrong with this job market?

I am not that crazy about using a credit card much. I mostly rely on using a debit card. The only time I use it is to pay my car insurance 6 months ahead and plane tickets.

The only reason I don't use much cc is that I have seen and heard the horror stories about people going beyond their means, so I have to have discipline on using credit cards when I need to use it

I am a full-time music producer. I made the switch from my full-time job about 7 months ago, and I earn about 5-6k a month.

For years I dreamed of what my life would be like as a full-time producer. I thought I would finally feel like the shit, finally I wouldn't have a reason to procrastinate, finally I'd feel like I  made it in life.

Yet despite my success, everyday is a fucking battle. I didn't realize that not having a boss would mean I would still be bound by my clients' needs. I didn't realize I'd have to motivate myself to get out of bed every morning and be my best self because nobody else is going to work on my behalf. I didn't realize that my procrastination and unhappiness didn't come from my job but from my own damn self.

I figured I'd have much more time to cook healthy foods and meditate and do shit for my own wellbeing, but I am so caught up in my business that I do even less of that than when I had a job. 

Daily, I dream of having a chill SaaS sales job or something that would still force me to grind but wouldn't force me to take responsibility for my own income every single day. A job that would match my pension savings and give me a sweet transportation subsidy or some shit. Just being a damn employee and having no stake in the future of whatever company I'm a part of. 

I miss working with a team. I miss having actual time off where I don't think about work every minute of every day. I miss not worrying about succeeding now and failing in 10 years, and then be in a much worse position than if I just stuck with a job. 

Dang, man. I feel so disappointed in myself. I've just taken for granted the fact that I get to wake up at whatever time I want, that I get to be a part of projects with people I looked up to for years, and that I make music for a living. 

But frankly, I miss just being an employee with a career path laid out in front of me. 

I have been running at 100% since I quit my job - even though I only really work 5-6 hours a day, I am constantly thinking about my business. It's exhausting and the more I achieve the more I find it difficult to stay excited.

I am 24 years old by the way. I worked in corporate for three years prior to quitting.

Hey everyone! I’m a 31-year-old male military pilot with no spouse or children who just surpassed $1 million in net worth.   
  
My purposes for posting are to:  
1.	Brag.  
2.	Provide a data point for other military officers on the path to FIRE.  
3.	Show that the military can be a very lucrative profession, contrary to the general public opinion.  
  
**How I got here**  
I was raised in an upper middle-class family in a major metropolitan area of the U.S. My father was born in a politically unstable country and fled to the U.S. as a young child. From his upbringing in a refugee family, he developed strong values of saving, work ethic, and independence which have since been instilled in me.   
  
I’ve always been naturally frugal and forward-thinking. In 2015 I graduated from a U.S. military service academy with a STEM degree. Service academies are completely free and actually pay students a small salary to attend. While in college I took out a $35k “Career Starter Loan” from USAA at 0.75% interest and put about $30k directly into the S&P 500 (this was 2013). In 2016 I heard about Mr. Money Mustache and started listening to FIRE podcasts with the goal of simply optimizing my long-term wealth. In 2021 I purchased a house that has grown nicely in value. I currently work as a military pilot with an annual income of $151,000 (will increase to $163,000 by the end of this year). 41% of my income is non-taxable, and I pay no state income taxes.

**Strategy**  
My strategy is simple: I have been persistently frugal in the categories that matter most (housing, car, dining, and insurance IMO) and have aggressively invested 100% of my extra income into boring index funds starting at a young age.   
  
I’ve always had roommates, drive a 14 year-old sedan with 100k+ miles, and rarely go out to eat. I don’t particularly enjoy owning expensive things—I like to spend my money on experiences like snowboarding, backpacking trips, and international travel.   
  
I try to keep $5,000 in my checking account, and any time I see more than that I’ll throw the remainder into either VTSAX or VFIAX. The “remainder” generally adds up to about $40k annually in recent years.   
  
I calculate my net worth on the 1st of every month and keep serial-killer-level spreadsheets of my financial records. I own 8 credit cards, all of which have zero annual fees for military, and I’m currently sitting on over $10k worth of rewards points. I max out my TSP and Roth IRA every year.   
  
**Future**  
I was recently assigned to a new unit in a HCOL area, and during that process I happened to read “Die With Zero” by Bill Perkins which has seriously changed my spending outlook as I’ve loosened my grip quite a bit.  
  
In 2.5 years I’ll be eligible to leave the military and I’ll likely pursue a career as a pilot in a major commercial airline. I have no plans to retire early since I believe my job gives me a sense of purpose and access to the majority of my social groups, but I could see myself working part-time and/or starting a business on the side.  
  
I’m extremely grateful to have come across the FIRE movement, and posts like these have motivated me to join the double comma club—I hope it does the same for you!  


31M Military Pilot $1 Million NW

Everyone says they that it's basically impossible to lose money on the s&p500 if you hold for 30 years. Then I came across ticker 5SPY that is a 5x leverage version of the s&p 500. My question is why not hold the leveraged version for 30 years and make 5x the returns?

If the s&p 500 is so safe long term why not buy leveraged shares? 

I just called up my bank to clarify their PMI removal criteria, and the person I chatted with said I was eligible to remove PMI immediately, even though my LTV ratio is 81.5% based on the original value. Any idea why?

We've made all of our payment on time and have been putting a little extra towards the principal, but aside from that I don't know why they'd let me remove PMI so early. I assume that market appreciation isn't relevant here, but I could be wrong.

Last year March I got a job at a company that I thought would be great. They told me I did so well in my interview that I interviewed at a senior level, and they'd be giving me a senior title. Great.


Three weeks ago my manager put me on a PIP. I had some actionable feedback here and there but didn't think I was close to this point, especially when he didn't mention anything to me about underperforming during my performance review in February. I think he just is introverted or something. But more importantly, I was underperforming.


And since then I've had to accept a lot of hard truths. That I'm nowhere as good as I thought I was, that I kind of suck at my job, and that the next few months are going to be awful after I get fired and I'll probably have to trade this job that I really like with one that I really don't like. I have no idea how to act like a senior software engineer, and Idk if this is recoverable or if it's something I can even learn. Looking back it's something I 100% should've realized.


And now I'm asking you for advice, what did you do when you were in this situation? I know I'm in a better position since I'm willing to be in office and I have 6 YoE, but still. I don't know what to do here. I'm asking, what did you do?

Ive been a dev for 2 years now. I started looking for a new role as soon as soon as I hit 1 year at my first job . I am at over 2000+ applications. I’ve done dozens of technicals and about 10 on-sites. I’ve had hiccups with some leetcode rounds, but I am convinced that most of my interviews go quite well. 

I’ve noticed a few things. Recruiters are ghosting way more and have crazy unrealistic expectations. The hiring bar is way higher and favors people with more YOE even if you do well on interviews. I can’t even begin to explain how many times I’ve been told “there was someone with more experience” for the past year, even after multiple rounds of interviews. And finally, I’ve been experiencing “quiet-hiring”. Been getting asked to handle more projects, do devops/sre and qa work outside of my normal swe work. I have no shot at getting promoted or getting a decent raise either. Despite this, I’m stuck here and it really sucks and it’s really demoralizing.

Thanks for reading through my rant. At the end of the day, I’ll probably just half-ass my current job for a while until I get my motivation back.




Tired of this job market

EDIT: Thanks for the feedback everyone! True to form, the house is now gone. This market is bonkers. However, I decided I am comfortable having a $2800 mortgage because I have other financial levers to pull in the short term. For me, a house is not just a financial decision, it's lifestyle as well. 



I found a home where 20% down is $86,000 and closing is $15,000, which is down to the penny how much I have saved for a home.

(I have a $25k emergency fund outside of my house fund, so this is not all my cash. I also have a strong retirement portfolio for my age, which is 37 this summer.)

My monthly payments would be $2800, which is doable but means no wiggle room in my budget, and I'll have to pull back on retirement investments until I can refinance, probably in 2 years.

I have no debt, and $2800 is 42% of my take home pay.

Is this dumb? Am I too house blind? I've been looking for 5 months and I feel kind of desperate to be done with this, and I am of the mind that the housing market is only going to get worse in the next few years.

I am very open to a roommate, but the house is only 1.5 baths, so I'd have to add a shower before I can get a roommate.

Putting less down is not an option, because then the monthly payments get too high. I don't mind things being tight for a period of time, but I don't want to screw myself over.

Sigh. This market is driving me crazy.

Am I Being Dumb About This House?

Initial estimate using material A was $40 out of pocket. They ended up using Material B without my knowledge that was not covered by my insurance and is now over $200 more OOP. 

Anything I can do? Not sure how good faith and no surprise act apply here since it’s dental, I am insured, and I did get an estimate (imo a “bad faith” one)

Dentist quoted one material but used a more expensive one…

4ish YOE here, currently working at one of the big tech companies. 

I’m very much unhappy/overworked in my current role and have accepted I need to move on. I’m trying to find an internal transfer but remains to be seen if I’ll actually be able to find one. 

I applied to a few jobs months back before I decided to give this job a second chance after management made some changes. Most roles were at smaller technically strong companies - think like Discord, Splunk, Slack, etc etc. Pretty much got zero bites. Disheartening because a couple years ago when I was searching I think I got an onsite every single place I applied 😬

Begrudgingly, I started applying to other big tech companies and got rejected by one that I previous made it to the on site of.. which is leaving me a little disheartened lol 

Out of curiosity has anyone in a similar situation attempted a job search right now, and if so how did it compare to previous searches for you? 



How hard is it to leave big tech and find a comparable role these days?

I’m early 30s F, recently married to early 40s M, living in VHCOL, childfree for life. 

I work in tech making ~$550k TC. Husband co-owns a very early stage startup with 1 more year of runway from VC funding and takes a salary of $150k. The funding environment is rough so I don’t know if they’ll be able to raise a series A. 

Our combined NW is about $2M excluding startup paper money. I came into the marriage with about 10x more assets since I’ve done well in my career and have saved aggressively. My husband has followed his dreams, which I respect and admire, but it’s been at the expense of maximizing his income and savings.  He’s always conceptually wanted to be FI in his 40s but I think he’s been banking on a big startup exit and/or didn’t realize how much money it actually requires to FIRE and how far behind he is.  

We don’t own any property and aren’t interested in it at this time. We’re aiming for about $6.5M in assets for a 3.25% SWR of $211k annually. Not sure what our combined spending is yet as I’ve only been tracking my own til recently but I’m guessing around $150-170k post tax. 

But…I just can’t do this job anymore. It’s crushing my soul and body. I’ve had serious health issues my whole life and this high stress lifestyle is making everything so much worse. I want to try something totally different and not particularly lucrative for a couple years. 

In order to not touch our savings, we’ll need to decrease our spending and my husband will also need to increase his income. I don’t want to carry the financial burden of our household anymore and since I’ve worked my butt off and created a very solid nest egg, I feel he should take a turn working a higher paid corporate tech job for a while.  He’s upset that I’m pushing him to give up on his dream to make more money. But there has to be some balance right? I’m spent and something’s gotta give.

I hope this little rant is okay. Just wanted to share my experience so others who are in the same position know they’re not alone.

I went to a 7 month accredited boot camp back in 2022 and graduated in January of 2023. I was part of the front end program there and learned JS, React, and Cypress. Around November 2023 I started applying to jobs.

Since then I have applied to probably over 1000 jobs with maybe 20 or so interviews out of it. Only 2 did I make it to the third round but was ultimately not selected.

I joined and unpaid internship in June 2023 and there I picked up a leadership and management role on the team I’m on. As well as learning back end development in Node.js, web scraping, and noSQL database management with MongoDB.

Fast forward to now and it’s been about  a year and half of applying and about 2 that I’ve been unemployed. I can no longer wait and keep trying for a job in the industry.

I’ve been told to network and I started off strong with it. But it was tough to maintain as an introvert with ADHD and no clear reward.

 It’s a bit sad to say goodbye to a career I found I really enjoy and could thrive in. But I can no longer try to wait for an entry into this industry in this capacity. I’ll be starting an electrician apprenticeship this summer instead and probably find a passion project to work on in my spare time that I can hopefully monetize. At least the job security will be a bit better for that. I know I could get my first SWE role and still be laid off next year with the way the market it.

Sorry for the long rant. Just wanted to share and say it’s okay pivot to something else if you’re struggling like I have. The market right now seems really unfriendly for juniors. And with the adoption of AI and companies outsourcing their junior roles over seas I’m not sure how much better it will get in the future.

So given that we are international students, we need sponsorship to continue working. Right now, almost no one wants to sponsor our work authorization, even F500 companies. How are we even supposed to apply to jobs anymore ?
