Your expenses may go up or down during retirement, in real or nominal terms, for all sorts of different reasons. The 4% rule, which is not a rule, is simply about outcomes of a fixed portfolio withdrawal rate under historic scenarios. It is completely agnostic about what you spend it on after you withdraw it.

I have never heard of a financial advisor advocate to sell your primary residence. Either you are in some serious finanical trouble and/or have very lofty, unreasonable financial goals for your age and timeframe. 

Whatever, your advisor wants to inveat you in you need to ask for the full breakdown of that package so you can research the actual performance of each stock and fund. You also need to ask for full transparency of your advisor's commissions and his/her company's fees. They may be acting in their best interest and not yours.

Now, for the rental property, that is one area i see people, including my own mother, mess up. People get weird thinking property is wealth. Thing is, it owns you back in maintenance, taxes and insurance. Your potential growth/profit margin on rental income is usually below the investment profit.

Whatever you do, dont just blindly take your advisor 's word. Great if they are honest and really acting as your fiduciary, but there are a lot of dishonest people out there. Read everything and ask questions. Get replies in writing.

Index funds are fine and people just shout buy VOO on here because it’s been on such a great run, but it’s been on a great run because the top 7 companies contribute to ~30% of the S&P 500 and maybe that’s too risky for you. 

People always say advisors can’t beat the market. Well, that’s not their job to beat the market it’s to help you retire comfortably. If you only need a 6% return to accomplish that why take the extra risk? No one on here ever considers that point.

Look I worked for a company 15 years and was scared to leave as I have a disability. To the point all my coworkers and friends said I was exploited. So I made a jump. It is not easy. 

So you have to make a choice do nothing and there are plenty of people living lives that don’t do anything. That is not living.

I am in in networking even though I am the gimp they thought they were doing a favor it took almost three people to replace me. Because there currently staff was clueless.

4% really isn’t aggressive. It’s simply the highest amount that worked 95% of the time. That’s fairly conservative.

There's definitively value in having a wealth manager support more complex financial situations. For many people who are simply doing the dca or boglehead type investing, a dedicated wealth manager is usually not necessary. Even people that don't know about investing can simply use target date funds or a robo instead of a wealth manager. 

But for people that multiple types of assets, family obligations, dealing with RMD, estate planning needs, etc. - yes - a wealth manager can incredibly helpful. 

As for when to engage a wealth manager - I think it depends on everyone's individual needs.

Long story short, I bought a house last Spring and accrued some credit card debt.  Between moving expenses, minor home repairs that added up, purchasing a lawn mower, etc. I found myself owing thousands in credit card debt and after months I wasn't making a dent because of the interest rates.  

After a few months I decided to apply for a personal loan and the lower interest rate made all the difference.  I hadn't made much progress because it had only been a few months, but last week I saw a huge withdraw from my checking account and it turned out to be the loan agency.  Needless to say, my eyes bulged out of my head when I saw that much money as a processing charge, money that I don't have.

After calling both the loan agency and my bank I cleared things up.  They had a system error which charged users the maximum monthly payment instead of the minimum on their automatic payment schedule.  The bank was quick to reject the pending charged within a few hours (especially easy seeing as I didn't have the funds to cover it anyway).  

A week later I get an email from the loan agency informing me the debt is paid in full, which my online portal confirms with a $0.00 balance.  I tried making my minimum monthly payment, but the site declines it because I don't have a pending balance to pay off and I can't reach a human being when I call. 

I saved these failed attempts for my records because I'm concerned this might go on for months and then I'll get hit with late fees, additional interest, or have the loan sent to collections.  Is there anyone with more experience in finance that can give me some direction as to steps I should take or precautions I should make?

My Personal Loan Mysteriously Paid Off In Full

When I was studying for my CS degree, I pictured myself solving complex problems, coding up cool features, and constantly learning new technologies. But now that I’ve started my first job, it’s different. A lot of my day is spent sitting in meetings, writing documentation, and coordinating with different teams.

Don’t get me wrong, I understand the importance of communication and planning in a team, but it feels like actual coding or technical problem-solving has taken a back seat. Sometimes I wonder if this is just a phase or if this is what the reality of being in the tech industry looks like long term.

For those who’ve been in the field for a while, does the balance shift as you grow? Do you eventually get to spend more time coding, or is this just part of being a professional developer?

I thought I’d be solving problems, but my first tech job feels more like endless meetings and coordination.

I've worked for the same company for 18 years. I'm 41.

My job skills aren't really transferrable -if I started with another company in the same industry-I won't-I wouldn't be able to take my clients with me.

I'm not really that bitter (yet). In this case, I actually don't blame the company at all.

Some general thoughts: I think the system has been broken for a long time and most of society has been coping with the issues they see. The vast majority of my co-workers nd even some of my bosses have hinted on how the system isn't working, even as they make more money.

I'm ok.

I have real estate with a lot of equity.

I went full blown insane, lived with family for free for years, and put that money into crypto over the last 4 years.

I spent the last 2 years during my main property into a functional, profitable airbnb. I think I will start managing and cleaning it-it won't be close to my old income, but it will help.

I've always feared this happening but now it's real. Thank God I have a low mileage very affordable car.

I got looped into an old group conversation with people I used to be close friends with this evening. Same old bullshit. I find it insane that people will continuously pretend they are rich when literally they can't pay their rent.

I've started really focusing on my health recently-while I don't blame my work, I know a lot of my choices were work>everything. At 41 and breaking free I can be okay with this. I don't know if I would at 45. At 60, I would be very very angry.

Late 50s, FIRE'd for several years and pretty much set for life. I have been volunteering, traveling, and catching up on family and friends. Life is good, no complaints, no worries.

However, I am presented with this opportunity to come back to work for a couple of years in a field I love and passionate about, and the package they offered could be worth a couple of millions dollars in the long run. I have the time, energy, and motivation but don't really need the money. It should be an easy decision but I keep flip-flopping between the pros and cons (cons having to do with less time for myself and other family obligations, reprogramming myself to work 9-5 again when I am already content). Anyone been in a similar situation? What did/would you do?

I’d like some advice on my current lease situation. Here’s the backstory:

In 2021, I leased a brand new Mazda CX-30 for 36 months. I put down $7,000, with monthly payments of $240, and insurance at $200. So, my total monthly expenses for the car came to $440 (not including gas), which was very affordable for me at the time.

Fast forward to today, my lease is expiring in November, and I went to my Mazda dealer to explore my options. They gave me three choices:

**A.** Return the car and walk away (with potential charges for any wear and tear after inspection).  
**B.** Buy the car for the remaining balance, which is $20,000 plus taxes.  
**C.** Return the car and sign a new lease.

I’ve checked online (FB Marketplace, Kelley Blue Book, etc.) for what my car is selling for now. The exact car 2021 Mazda Cx30 with 60,000 km are selling for $30,000–$32,000. This suggests my car has about $10,000–$12,000 in positive equity (Note: all the listings I’ve seen are from dealerships, not private sellers).

This is my first time leasing a vehicle, and I’ve heard that if you handle things right, you can profit from a lease.

If I choose to finance the $20,000 buyout at the dealership, the interest rate is around 10%, and the bank isn’t much better at 9.5%. Taking $20,000 out of my savings would leave me with nothing, which isn’t feasible.

If I opt for a new lease (for a 2025 Mazda CX-30), I’d need to put down another $7,000 to keep the monthly payments around $390 for 36 months at 3.5% interest. Without a down payment, the payments would be $590 per month. Honestly, the 2025 model doesn’t offer significant upgrades—it’s mostly the same car with a few extra features.

In total, I’ve spent $15,640 on this car over the past 36 months ($7,000 down payment + $8,640 in lease payments). My friends are suggesting I finance the remaining $20,000 since I’ve already invested a lot into it already. It's a great, reliable car and by the end of the financing term, I’d own the car outright, knowing its full history, and avoid the risks that come with buying a used car from a private seller. They also mentioned that if I buy the car, I could sell it later, especially if the used car market stays strong, I could potentially make a profit or at least recoup some of the money I’ve invested.

For context, I’m in my late 20s, based in Canada, and need a vehicle for work, so going without a car isn’t an option. I’m also actively investing and trying to build wealth.

I’m trying to weigh my options and find a solution that won’t put me in a difficult financial position. Any clarity, suggestions, or advice on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated!

$12K Positive Equity in My Leased Car—What Should I Do?

I am so stumped right now. I have a near 4.0 gpa in school. I studied hard and understood all the CS topics (datastructures&algos, languages, etc) and got 2 internships (1 with a big company). + tutoring. Now that i'm applying to jobs and doing hackerrank, I am REALLY bad at hackerrank (as in understand basic topics like for loops but apply the knowledge) and I cannot get a single job for the life of me since coding interviews kick my ass. What the --- is going on?

Why in gods name is it doable in practice at school but not in execution in the real world?

29, male. In London. I made a post before about how I have been on the job hunt for years (yes, years) and haven’t been able to get a job despite thousands of applications. Applied to everything even low paid non skilled entry level and minimum wage jobs get rejected from that as well. 

On top of that I’m in a lot of debt, and my third business has just failed which is a marketing agency I’ve been working on for 2 years which I’ve just had to close as I couldn’t get clients. 

I’m in credit card debt, overdrafts, student loan debt. Deeper than broke, failed businesses which I thought would work out and get me out of poverty and make me a good living. And I’m so fed up of it all and see no point in carrying on in life. Especially with the fact that I can’t even get a job and only get rejections. So I’m stuck with no options. I have tried everything to get a job. 

At least if I could get a job, I would get back on my feet and start another business idea in the near future but I can’t even do that. 

3 failed businesses, just shut down a marketing agency I worked on for the past 2 years and also broke, in debt & cant get a job either. 

Hey all, I’m 28 M and I haven’t saved a penny for retirement, I just landed an awesome job that pays 100k a year + a 10% annual bonus the job is 75% remote with overtime opportunities (I plan to work as much OT as I can handle) 

I have 20k in a joint savings account with my fiancé but we’re planning on using that to buy a house in a few months 
And about 2k in other accounts 

I have 0 debt, my rent is only $500 a month, and I spend about $175 a month on my pets 

My new job has a 6% 401k match that I plan to max out 

How much more should I save to retire in my mid to late 60s? How do I go about calculating this? 

28 Years old and I’ve never saved for retirement 

I've been managing around $500k in an old IRA and a brokerage account with E-Trade, not to mention my company 401k.  Have about 6 months of income in a high yield savings account that could probably last a year if needed.  I've done CDs in the past but my savings is paying the same or more than CDs of late.

I keep reading about wealth managers and such but I hear the returns a friend of mine is getting and I just laugh.  Am I missing something?  I'm a buy and hold investor with stocks and ETFs, so it's not like I'm gambling in crypto.

I'm likely to sell some other assets soon and will have another 1M or so to invest elsewhere, but I just don't see how that should change what I'm doing.

First time posting.  I’ve been a practicing attorney for almost 20 years, working at the same in-house job for 15.  Was recently blindsided with a termination after being assured for several years I was part of the succession plan.  I know, cry me a river, amirite?

Now I’m lost.  Don’t know what I want to be when I grow up or how I go about figuring it out.  Also, sad, depressed, and unmotivated at the moment.

Blindsided with a termination after 15 years; now what?

I'm supposed to start a CS bachelors program this coming spring after finishing my associates in CS at a community college with flying colors, but hearing the horror stories about how oversaturated the job market is has me wondering if it's better to switch fields in advance. Are there certain skill niches that have been left relatively untouched by the insane number of CS students out there? Is there any evidence that the situation will improve?

Is the CS job market really as bad as everyone says? Should I switch degrees if I'm seeking employability? 

Most studies, simulations and calculators consider the fact that your expenses grow with inflation. Which is totally reasonable for most situations and most expenses. 

However for most of us our biggest expense is housing and if you have a fixed rate mortgage (either part of the mortgage or the entire thing) then that part is not tied to inflation. HoA, taxes, maintenance and insurance still are though. 

Also a mortgage typically lasts 30 years and then you're done with that expenses entirely (again except HoA, taxes, maintenance and insurance which are subject to inflation and do last forever.)

Even modest/ideal 2% inflation has a huge effect on expenses over a 30 year retirement. Something that costs $2000 today will cost 2000*1.02^30 = $3622 in the future dollars which means if it's not tied to inflation it will cost a lot less in the future in today's (real) dollars. 

So when modeling your retirement use a calculator that lets you set an expense that is of limited duration (e.g. 30 years or whatever remains on your mortgage) and let's you set that expense not to be tied to inflation.

In summary: the 4% rule is a good "rule of thumb" but understanding your financial/retirement picture requires deeper analysis than just 25x annual spending. And in many ways the 4% rule is aggressive but in this regard (mortgage) it's actually conservative. 

What many 4% analyses miss out on: mortgage payments are not tied to inflation. 

So we recently met with our financial advisor and basically they suggested we do the following: 
1) sell both of our properties. One being a rental property that’s valued at $410k with renters currently (we’re not making a lot of money off the renters. FYI but they’re covering the mortgage and we take home make $250)

2) sell our current property that we reside in worth $989k and downsize to a house about 500k 

3) allow them to Invest 900k that we have liquid so that in the next 10-15 years that turns into 3million but I really don’t want to move from my current house. Is there not another reasonable way to make 900k in liquid invest without having to uproot your whole life?

I have around 20 years of experience as a software dev (41m, in Germany, started professionally when I was 17), mostly in Java and Python, almost exclusively on the backend/high load scenarios. Recently I added Rust to my portfolio and finished a 3 month in-depth data science course.

In my career so far I've only ever had to deal with really huge code bases. The stuff colleagues warn you about with scary things like: "took me two years to get it all at least somewhat" etc. For my last job, I really tried hard to not fall into this trap again, but they found the one project again that was 20 years old with a monolithic code base af and even tried to make me lead dev there to disassemble it into smaller chunks (not saying microservices or alike). Apparently I'm good with huge code bases, but I hate it. I quit within weeks, it even made me sick.

So I'm thinking, I might be looking for jobs in the wrong areas. The question is: where can I find fulfilling jobs as a software dev that offer tasks/projects which are not set for years, but more for like weeks to months? To actually see some kind of end to it and have a change once in a while? The only area I could come up with might be police services where they deal with "cyber" crime. But I might be too old to join this. Have I become too unimaginative?

Areas I have worked in so far included: research, online games, aerospace industry, geomapping services, automotive industry.

Any pointers (or even concrete companies in Berlin/remote) appreciated!

Edit: I used to be the lead dev in a start up, as in first employee, building the whole code base from scratch. This was quite satisfying. But everything else was pretty bad. I'd only again join a startup as a founder, not as a dev.

Sick of huge code bases. Where do I go now?

Long story but will try to post enough to answer the question “how can I get my mother medical help without breaking into her very small savings?

My mother has around maybe 150k to max $300k (unsure of amount) due to my brother dying in an accident.

My mother needs medical attention for chronic symptoms (swollen legs and pain that won’t allow her to walk long) and because she is missing many teeth. I got her on medical and before the money she was seeing a doctor but stopped during court proceedings for my brothers death as it took a huge toll.

Now she won’t go see a doctor out of fear of losing her money and needing to pay out of pocket for medical care or she is scared they take it all or even some.

She is very poor and stopped working over 20 years ago. She is dependent on me and a partner who is also poor. 

She has many health issues and won’t call any agencies herself to figure this out.

Ok questions 
1. Can i get her back on medical or senior Medicaid in CA with this money in her account?

2. What if any are the penalties for my mom transferring money to me so she can get medical care? I read somewhere you cannot have had money or assets for 5 years before you can get the type of insurance that covers major surgeries (my mom’s condition likely will require surgeries), so maybe that is not an option

3. Should I invest her money in something that could help her in the future, I am also close to poverty and this is a small amount of money in the scheme of her having absolutely nothing else to her name and looking toward a future where I will be caring for her in retirement.

FIRST JOB:
I work as a product manager, earning around $75,000 per year. I'm essentially running the company’s operations in Japan on my own, and while I have some responsibility and a small team, I only work about two hours a day. I'm listed on the labor registry as a full-time employee, but here’s the issue: I don’t have proper social insurance coverage. I will receive a pension when I retire (like anyone would through the national pension system), but my maternity leave and benefits are lacking compared to typical full-time employees. 

The people I work with are nice, and the salary is decent, but the company previously tried to fire me in a rather sneaky way — they cut down my workload and stopped communicating with me to save money. I even had to fly to Singapore to confront the CEO. Thanks to the help of my colleagues, I managed to explain the situation in Japan, and they gave me a second chance. However, there’s always the looming risk that I could be let go if things don’t improve. 

Oddly enough, while they want to profit from Japan, they aren’t willing to make any serious investment in this market. 🤷‍♂️

SECOND JOB:
My second job is still within the same industry, but there's no conflict of interest. I'm working as a freelancer and leading a big team, preparing the company to take over the Japanese market. 

The pay is better than the first job — $100,000 per year — but since it's freelance, I don’t have access to pension or insurance. The job itself is enjoyable, and while the colleagues aren’t as great as those in the first company, I don’t have to work much (just about 3-5 hours a day), so it works out.

THIRD JOB:
I started my third job with my husband about six months ago. We launched a business in the same field and together, we’re making around $100,000 per year. This company came out of nowhere, and we only work about two hours a day on it, which gives us decent flexibility.
All the profit is being used for the renovation of a villa we bought. So, there is no real profit, but reinvestment. 

So far... everything is sustainable. We have enough time for our dates and breakfasts and time together. 

FOURTH JOB:
This one’s a curveball. I haven’t really started working there yet, but it’s a company I used to work for, and the CEO has terminal cancer. He’s asking me to take over the business. The plan is for his wife to become CEO, while I would essentially run the company as a COO, managing the day-to-day operations. 

Here’s the backstory:  
My former boss is a difficult person, to say the least. He was abusive to his daughter (even leaving her naked in the snow for punishment in some twisted "teaching" method). His daugther left him, and went with his ex wife. He says he feels betrayed by everyone. He’s now marrying a woman I’ve never met, seemingly because she’s taking care of him in his last months of life. She has no experience in the industry, and she’s not capable of running the business — it takes years of expertise. Essentially, I’d be doing all the work, supporting her as well. My former boss has suggested that I handle everything while giving his wife $50,000 a year. Basically, the company will be bleeding 50K a year for her. I would see fit a minimun basic pension for 10 years maybe.

Working for him was always tough. He even blamed his current assistant for causing his cancer.

There were times I cried because of how difficult it was.
Despite all this, I feel indebted to him. He taught me so much, and I feel that much of my success is because of his guidance.

The pay would be similar to my second job: $100,000 per year, plus $30,000 for extra expenses. On the surface, it seems like a good deal. But the downsides are significant — immense responsibility, no formal title, and the risk that his wife could eventually sell the company or mismanage everything after a few years.

MY HUSBAND:
He’s my family. We have two kids together, and he believes that it’s not fair for me to take on the burden of supporting this man’s wife after his death while not even holding the title of CEO. He thinks I’m only considering this out of pity. And I should not accept.

So, what should I do with the fourth job?
Should I accept it and cut a job, maybe the second one?

My Boss Is Dying. He Wants to "Leave" His Company to Me, to Support His Wife. What Shoukd I do?

I just read through [this post](https://old.reddit.com/r/investing/comments/1fcct5d/do_i_really_need_a_wealth_manager/) and all the comments. Most feedback seems to be “no you don’t need a wealth manager, it just costs you money for something you can do yourself.”

Follow up question to that- what if managing my wealth isn’t as simple as “DCA into an index fund until I retire”? 

Obviously I know how to do that. What I don’t know how to do is

1. Anything related to the annuity a relative set up for me

2. Back door Roth contributions

3. Manage my wife’s inheritance from a deceased relative and the laws around that

4. When are we going to hit the gross adjusted income for Roth contributions and how to navigate that

Idk those are all things that I don’t know how to do, & they kind of have big tax implications if we screw it up. It’s easy to say “wealth managers/financial advisors steal from you” but at what point do you need someone who actually knows this shit to help you with it?

Going off of the last post… at what point DOES someone need a wealth manager?

Backstory, I've been in the same hotel working for 4 years now. I started as a front desk agent before my 1st year I was promoted to a front manager and then 18 months later promoted to assistant general manager. My GM then was going into maternity leave, as AGM I was acting GM for a year and the company promoted me to be the property's official GM just August this year.

Throughtout my time at the hotel I have never had longer than one week vacation. When I was promoted to AGM I was changed to salary and was given 3 weeks paid vacation, I have never taken longer than a week vacation since I am acting GM. Most are just extra days off that I take since I am off weekends anyway. 

The other day, I told my regional manager that I am going on a month long vacation next year between January & February 2025. She called me and told me she was " disappointed " and so is the two owners that I will be gone for 26 business days. She told me this was supposed to be a discussion in our head office.

I was definitely taken by surprise as I did not think it would be that big of a deal if I had my supervisor trained to do what needs to be done while I am away. Also, I am hard on myself always so hearing they are " disappointed " definitely did not sit well with me... I hate disappointing people..  

Am I overreacting? Am I overthinking this? Am I wrong to think it would be okay for me to leave if I had someone trained? They said as a key person they were suprised I'll be gone that long which I completely understand.

I am also scared that this will be held against me even thought for the past 4 yrs I have dedicated my time and effort to the company. I know I am good at what I do since they wouldnt have promoted me that fast if I wasn't..

Is it a crime to take your 3 weeks vacation all at once?

It seems like there are plenty of books on how to retire early or get rich, and others on how to enjoy retirement when you stop working at the usual age. But I haven’t come across anything specifically aimed at those of us who’ve retired early. Does anyone know of any?

It would cover things like: what to expect (so many feels!), managing the early days, practising your hobbies, learning, increasing your healthspan, prioritising social connections, time with the kids, giving back, savouring life's joys, planning for the long term, etc, etc.
