You should put as much as possible, 100% even, into a Roth IRA, not just an IRA… ROTH and let that baby grow tax free coe 50 years….  And for God sakes, at 17 years old, you should own 0 bonds… that’s right, 0… none… zip and don’t let someone talk you into some.

Go to your local library and ask about where to talk to a financial professional. Where I live they have such services and they can help you or at least guide to a better understanding of your options. It is free


Also and this is really important, 

If there’s a law school near by, go there and ask if they have some legal clinic, and you need advice on whether or not to file bankruptcy. If there’s none, you still can call your city’s legal services office. Most cities they offer cheap legal advice, $50 in my city, where you can talk to a lawyer for 30 min and ask all kinds of questions and hear what solutions they propose. 

Keep going to school. If you’re studying engineering you will make ok money and your problem will fade gradually. Keep at it man. Praying for you.

I used to work on an open source project with a team of volunteers. One by one, I noticed as each person later got a full time software job, they pretty much quit contributing over time. The burnout from working leaves you little room to pursue creative coding. It's kind of sad, but I totally understand now that I'm in the same position.

You’ve been through a lot and yet here you are (proactively taking charge and looking for a solution). You got this! $35k may seem like a lot to you right now, but it’s nothing in the grand scheme of things.

We are missing some details like where is this debt? Is it spread over multiple accounts? What’s the interest rate? Is it something that maybe a loan consolidation could help with and get you a lower interest rate? Ask your school if they have any free resources to help with things like this. You might be surprised with what you find. Even with the mental health aspect.

Have you contacted capital one and ask if you can send in a money order or a (forgot the name) a secured check, cashiers check.

I think that's your ego talking. If you need the money then just take the job for now to pay your bills. It's not going to be forever, just until you can find something better. 

If you don't need the money urgently then take your time and find something else.

The only leverage you have is not working there. So the more you demonstrate the intention to stay, the less leverage you have.

Google's fading, apparently. Got a haircut today and there was a magazine with a full-page Google ad bragging about how reliable and trustworthy their news search is. Never seen Google advertise their basic free stuff like that before. Ad for a news search, really? Feels like they know their days are numbered.

i think people like to feel like they did it on their own with no help. but financial privilege is a huge spectrum. your financial outcomes are often equally as dictated by your zip code as your parents aid. i went to one of the best public schools in the country. my parents loaned me a car when i was 16 so i could go to work. they paid for some of my education, i paid for the other half. so i can’t say im “self made”. access and opportunity are equally as valuable as a lump sum down payment for a home, etc. it’s hard to acknowledge because although i am extremely privileged, i did also work extremely hard. people have a hard time allowing both ideas to exist at the same time. idk, just my two cents.

They have in person banking locations. Is there one near you? If there is a location somewhat near her, she can go in person, ask to speak to a manager and bring multiple forms of ID (eg like a passport AND a real ID- so it's abundantly clear it's her), and they can get her sorted quickly.

My wife and I own a construction company focusing on designing and building custom mountain cabins. 

The business was originally an architecture firm and 2.5 years ago we converted to a full service GC firm. I've been in tech for most of my career, had a few startups and while I still work in tech I did all of the sales, marketing and biz dev for the firm.

We now design and build 4-5 homes a year. We have another architect a PM and a few others on the team and from last year to this year we will do roughly 3x revenue from last year.

Also got into excavation so that we can offer more inhouse services..

Yes, you're definitely not alone I’ve seen the same trend across a few of my sites. The new AI overviews are eating up a ton of clicks, even when you're still ranking on page 1.

Right now, I’m experimenting with:

1. More topical authority: doubling down on clusters instead of one-off posts
2. Updating old content: keeping things fresh and adding unique insights
3. Diversifying: putting more effort into email, Reddit, and even Quora for direct traffic

That is insane - 3 years exp and 7 months job search lol. Not a good outlook for us grads lol.

Have you tried saying "we want to send you the money you say we owe and then close the account"?  Like tell them you DGAF about "unlocking" anything you just want to pay them their money and be done with this?  

If they won't let you do that, tell them they aren't going to get paid and ask if they are OK with that and if they will put that in writing.  Then go and dispute the debt with credit agencies.

Open a Roth IRA online and start depositing. Put it into VOO or VTI — either is fine for now.

If you really don’t have much expense, try to put something like 500 a month in the Roth IRA and 500 a month into a high yield savings account. Build us a savings nest egg that you could use to pay for school, work training, certifications, or just a general emergency. It sounds like you can afford to save right now.

The only way to get paid your market value is for your company know that you will leave if you aren’t getting paid market value.

Profit has no loyalty. It’s that simple. If this doesn’t make sense, then review the definition of what a rational actor is in economics.

Everyone says “loyalty matters” but I’ve watched coworkers stay in the same role for 5+ years while I’ve switched jobs twice and doubled my salary.

I’m 27 and it feels like job hopping is the only way to beat inflation and get paid what you’re worth.

But I still worry it’ll hurt me later.

Do employers actually value “loyalty” anymore or do results matter more?

Hey y'all, a bit of a morbid post. 37 and have multiple health issues. I also have a wife and a daughter. I'm wondering if I die before the age of 60, what will happen to my 401(k) when I leave it to them? Will they get to use the amount that's in it before a certain age? Will he still have to pay a penalty? I know the control of the account will go over to my wife. Should something like that happen, and I have pretty good life insurance, but I just wanna make sure everything's gonna be OK for them should something happen. Thanks 

What happens to my 401k if I die before the age of 60?

This sub is awesome for motivation and strategy, but sometimes I can’t help but feel like I’m behind. I’m 30M with a $460k net worth, and yet I still get that gut feeling that I’m underperforming when I see posts from people in their mid-20s already hitting half a mil or more.

Is that actually becoming more common, or do those posts just get the most upvotes and visibility? It sometimes feels like everyone here is a high earner and elite-tier saver, and I’m just trying to keep up.

I was told after 30+ years with my employer I will be laid off in one year, possibly less. Company has merged.  I was selected for a one-year transition team, with the other .  I think it’s doubtful I would be extended past that time. Aside from trying to pay off as much debt as I can, what else should I plan for?

EDIT:  A decent raise and retention bonus were offered.  If I didn’t take the offer I would have left the old company with no severance.  The retention bonus was ok, but not great.

Last year I worked with Marcus, a digital marketing agency owner stuck at $55K annual revenue. He was charging $497/month for social media management while his competitors charged $400-800. Seemed reasonable, right? Wrong. He was attracting price-sensitive clients who viewed his service as a commodity, constantly defending his prices, dealing with late payments, and watching clients cancel after 2-3 months. His churn rate was 65% - absolutely brutal.

After analyzing his numbers, I told Marcus double your prices. Today. Not 10% higher, not 20% higher. Double. From $497 to $997. His said Are you trying to kill my business? Nobody's gonna pay that! But here's what most people don't understand - pricing isn't just about money, it's about positioning. When Marcus charged $497, he was saying he's basically the same as everyone else. When he doubled to $997, he was saying he's fundamentally different. We rebuilt his entire approach instead of social media management, he positioned as revenue-focused social media strategy. Instead of talking about posts and followers, he talked about conversion rates and customer acquisition. Added monthly strategy calls, required 6-month minimums, introduced performance bonuses tied to client revenue growth.

The results? Lost 40% of existing clients but signed 8 new ones at the higher rate. Average client lifetime went from 2.8 months to 11+ months. Old model $497 × 25 clients × 2.8 months = $34,790 total value. New model $997 × 15 clients × 11 months = $164,505 total value. Same work, same time, 373% more revenue. The crazy part? His new clients were EASIER to work with. When someone pays $997/month, they take it seriously. They show up, implement recommendations, measure results. Marcus went from working 60-hour weeks serving 25 demanding clients to 35-hour weeks serving 15 clients who see him as essential. Revenue hit $190K, but more importantly, his life got infinitely better.

Quick background for everyone. 

Male  
37 years old  
Married 

base Salary: 150k/yr

Currently invests in: 12% 401k contribution + 6% match && 3% employee stock purchase program && maxed out Roth IRA && 600.00 monthly deposit into vanguard ETF. 

On track to retire comfortably.

Typical month he may have anywhere between 1k to 3k after bills and expenses. He's just stockpiling it into a HYSA and thinking about increasing contributions to 401k and vangaurd.

2025: He now has stage 5 Kidney Failure. Currently on dialysis and active on transplant list. 

He is still working full time at the moment and doesn't plan to stop until he has to. 

Doctors have said with dialysis he can live very comfortably into old age. (60s 70s) there's transplant expected in 5 to 6 years but life expectancy of a deceased donor kidney is 5 to 15 years because he is still young. If he gets a transplant at 43 he will need another transplant at 58 to 64.... with another transplant that might last until he's 74 or less because of older age not to mention future health issues.

  
My question: If this were you in this situation, would you be increasing your contributions preparing for the best life after 65 or would you reduce to only 401k match (6%), stop maxing ROTH, and invest into something shorter term to enjoy life now? 

This person lives well below his means, so his salary is comfortable for him, but knowing he may not enjoy years and years of retirement, it seems like the better choice to spend more now then save for later while quality of life is still high in his younger years.

If anyone has any input or similar stories I'd love to hear them

very fortunate to have an offer in this economy but holy... seems like a lot of stress for 60k in a low to MCOL area

any class of '25 ngs getting wrecked as a junior swe?

Long story short; I'm one of those lucky ones who received an IPO payout that resulted in an accelerated path to financial independence (I'm about 10 months away or 4 quarterly vests away from reaching my FIRE number).

The problem is that I have been thinking a lot about next steps lately and realized that I'm just not very good at anything else other than my current job. I work as a data analyst and I'm good at working with corporate data, but only on a limited scale (which I'm doing now). I thought about post-FIRE career options, such as helping NGOs with their data problems, but the people I reached out to so far simply said that they can sort these things out in-house, and unless I'm a data scientist (which I'm not), they can't really use me.

I also thought about going back to school to do another degree in finance (currently I only have a bachelor degree in Linguistics), but I would be over 40 by the time I finished that. And again, it would be difficult to find work as a new starter who is over 40.

I know post-FIRE life is not about career and doing work, but I want to feel useful, just don't know how. All my life was in the corporate world, that is where I know people (and some in the NGO sphere, but that's a much smaller space in my network), so starting a new life outside of that world just feels like social suicide.

Those who pivoted to something new, did you have some/most things planed already when switching to your post-FIRE life? It feels like it would be a mistake for me to jump into the void and then "figure it out" while not having the 9 to 5 structure and the illusion of "being useful" around me anymore.

Walking away from a job is way harder than I thought

Basically title. I am diagnosed Bipolar 1 but have been on medication since 2017. I have had credit cards since 2018, never carried a balance. In 2023 I was set. Car fully paid off. No debt. Got a full ride to a good school, studying engineering. Had $10,000 in savings which is a lot for my age. 401k with a few thousand.



Moved cities due to school. My rent,tuition, food, everything was paid by scholarships so didn’t have to worry about working anymore. Because I had to move cities I had to move psychiatrists. Unfortunately all psychiatrists in my new city had waitlists to see them. I could have gone to ER for refills, but tbh didn’t put too much effort. I had a lot going on with the move, breakup, and having major surgery. So somewhere around September 2023 stopped taking my meds.



In the next year I experienced manic episodes, psychotic episodes [seeing and hearing things that weren’t there] and depressive episodes [tried to die multiple times]. I went through all of my savings, and accumulated $35,000 in debt. I have no idea how I spent the money, as I said I didn’t have to pay rent or anything. October 2024 I dropped out of school, was admitted into a psychiatric hospital. Started meds again. Now I am stable. I have been working two jobs since then, I work 60 to 80 hours a week, earning minimum wage. However, I seem to make no progress on my debt. I am currently working 60+ hours while taking two classes, as I want to finish my degree. I have As in my classes, however my mental health is suffering and I can barely take it anymore. Should I declare bankruptcy? I see no way out of this. At this pace I will be debt free in three years, but I feel like I will die before those three years end.



Please advise.

**Overview**

About 7 months ago, I got a job as a software engineer at a great company straight out of college. For the most part, I like my job. I really can't complain, but I just wanted to get other people's perspective.

  
**Context**

I went to school for programming because I loved it. My passion was mainly in embedded systems. During college, I was lucky enough to get a position as a research engineer on a research program, and got to write the firmware for a very small satellite. I truly loved it. During this period, I submitted hundreds of job applications that went nowhere. I ended up getting my current job from a connection I made during college.

Don't get me wrong, I like my current job. I am not complaining in the slightest, I fully understand how lucky and privileged I am to be in my current position, and I don't take that for granted. I went through the job struggle like many others have. I even followed this sub, and almost lost hope because of it :(

  
**Question**

In my current position, I write Python microservices for a very large company. It can be interesting. Most importantly though, I couldn't be happier with my coworkers. They have taught me so much, and I genuinely like working with them.

  
However, I've found that my passion for programming has started to fade away. My day job is very far away from embedded systems, which as I mentioned before, is what I am passionate about. But when I get home, and even on the weekends, I just don't have it in me anymore to bust out the Arduino or STM32 board and do a side project. I used to love doing that stuff. It was my hobby, and I was good at it. 

  
That being said, I realize that it is in part what got me my current job. But, I can't help but be a little sad that I no longer have the energy, or passion, to start side projects like I used to. It is especially frustrating because I finally have the skills to do truly *cool* projects, but I just don't feel like it anymore.

  
**Conclusion**

Again, this is just to get other software engineers' perspective. Have any of you experienced anything similar? How do you get around this? I really *want*  to keep doing side projects, but just don't have the motivation anymore now that I write code 40+ hours a week.

Got a software engineering job, but don't want to program anymore

 No offense intended, I just want to hear the stories of business providing goods and services to customers rather than optimization of other businesses or apps for this and that. The kind of stuff that requires labor that's not your own to consumers.

I run a small company $1M/yr manufacturing "wood products". I want to hear the stories of real product/service business (no SaaS, SEO, marketing etc)

So I’m currently 17. I’m lucky enough to have no bills other than gas and I’m making about 2,500 a month. Should I put 200-250 a paycheck into stocks or bonds or an IRA. I’m the first in my family to want to invest so I don’t really have anyone to ask so I figured I should ask here

1. I’m probably not going to college. I’m in the trades and so far it’s working out for me. College would be a 2nd choice incase something happens and I can’t work a trade.

Should I invest 1/4 of my paycheck

Business flopped. No other opportunity seems to be opening up. Finally swallowed my ego and started applying for jobs. Getting rejected because I don't have the experience necessary. The only available job right now is to be the desk assistant of another business person. Answer her calls and emails. Book her hotels when she is traveling. I don't think I can bring myself to do that. It would feel like a fresh slap on the face everyday. 

The worst part of entrepreneurship

**Intro.**

I wanted to share my experience job searching and then finally getting a job. I worked at my first full-time software engineering job for 3 years and then got laid off in late 2024. I thought it would be fairly easy to find my next job since I had 3 years of experience and even a master's degree. But it was much more difficult than I expected.

**Story time.**

At first I only applied to big tech. I even got to a final round big tech interview but the system design round went poorly and I did not receive an offer. After that I gradually ramped up the number of applications and widened my search. I'm mid-level but I was applying to junior as well as senior roles that fit my background.

Over the first three months (Q1 2025) I got very few positive responses. In March I started applying more consistently, about 8 applications per day, and in mid April I ramped it up to about 25 per day. In May and June I started to get many more recruiter calls and interviews. At this point, every week I would have about four of them.

After five months in I got close to the end with two different companies. But both ended up turning me down. Then finally, on a Tuesday I got an offer but it was with an early stage startup that couldn't offer much compensation. Like it wasn't just low for a software engineer, it was low for anybody. I happened to be interviewing with another company that same week, so I told them about my pending offer. They quickly scheduled my remaining interviews, which happened to all go well, and by Friday I received a much better offer from them. I took it.

I feel incredibly fortunate because after seven months of searching I would have reluctantly taken a far worse offer, but the offer I got was very good.

**Where I applied.**

About 50% of my applications were on LinkedIn. The rest were company websites, Indeed, Built In, ZipRecruiter, and Handshake. Handshake is where I found my next job.

**The numbers.**

Now for the numbers... oh boy. In total I applied to 1892 jobs. I had 15 recruiter calls and 24 technical interviews, and approximately 12 online or take-home assessments. **Advice.**

Over the months, I improved my resume but I wish I had done that sooner. I didn't used to have a "Skills" section but I added one and I think this helped. Recruiters are often just looking for key words.

Don't give up. It was agonizing to search for seven months. And I know many of you have been searching for much longer. Something will come around. It's not you, it's the job market. You can get a thousand rejections but one offer, and that one offer is all that matters.

I spent my free time working on a couple side projects and improving some skills, which I'm glad I did. I also spent more time with my friends and got more involved with my community through volunteering, which I'm also glad I did. Best of luck out there, and be happy that I'm no longer competing with you!

After 7 months of searching, I got a job! (lots of details below)

Over the past couple of months, I’ve seen a noticeable dip in organic traffic to my site and I’m guessing a big reason is the AI-generated answers Google is showing right at the top now. Most users don’t even scroll anymore. It’s frustrating because content that used to rank well and bring in steady traffic is now getting buried.

I’m wondering how others are dealing with this. Are you shifting your focus to other channels? Trying different types of content? Or just riding it out?

Anyone else noticing a big drop in Google traffic lately?

I’ve been a long time lurker of this sub and find it really useful/inspirational. 

To be clear, this is not to shit on people who *might* be dishonest about their story, but rather open the dialogue on the subject. One pattern I’ve noticed is that many FIRE success stories highlight hustle, discipline, smart investing, (or zero context at all), but rarely mention the quieter boosts we may have received along the way e.g a paid off university education, rent free years in a family home, gifts,inheritance or an informal safety net that gives us permission to take bigger risks.

This isn’t a call out. I don’t think anyone is intentionally hiding anything, nor do I believe family help invalidates someone’s hard work. Frankly, I’m grateful for the nudges I’ve had (though I am MILES away from FIRE for the record), and I suspect many of us here on this sub are better off than the vast majority of people on the planet.

A few questions I have:

Why is it so hard to acknowledge these boosts? Pride? 

Does full transparency about family help make our FIRE narratives more useful for newcomers, or does it risk discouraging people who don’t have that support?

Are people generally ashamed to share that they got help from family?


I used to think staying loyal to one company would eventually “pay off” — promotions, raises, recognition. But over time, I’ve realized that’s often not the case.

Companies tend to benchmark your value against your current compensation, not your actual market worth. If you stay too long, especially without aggressively pushing for raises, you can easily fall behind by 20–40% compared to peers who jump every 2–3 years.

I’ve seen it happen to myself and coworkers:
	•	People who were “boomeranged” (left and came back) were offered more than those who stayed.
	•	New hires with less experience were paid more.
	•	HR literally used phrases like “internal equity” to cap raises for existing employees while paying market rates to outsiders.

It’s frustrating — loyalty gets treated like a weakness, not a strength.

I’m not saying job-hopping for no reason is always the answer, but if you’ve been somewhere for 3+ years and haven’t gotten a significant raise… you’re probably being undervalued.

Why does loyalty seem to lower your worth over time?

Hi, this is a pretty strange situation and my partner and I aren't sure what to do at this point.

My mother in-law has a credit card with Capital One. It's in her name but she shared the login info with her husband (who she's in the process of separating from), and he was the one managing it up until now. About a year ago, my MIL + her husband were living in an Airbnb temporarily between the sale of a house and moving into a new apartment. Apparently, at some point the address on record for the card was updated to the Airbnb...I am not sure how/why, I guess her husband did that? At some point after that, a lock was placed on the account for some reason ("suspicious activity" I guess? Right now I don't know what someone did to trigger it), which prevents MIL from charging to or paying off the card; any payment with a bank account is returned to the account. The card has a balance of about $1000 on it and is still accruing interest/late payment charges monthly.

We called Capital One and they insist the \*only\* way to unlock the account is to provide proof of address for the address on file. Issue is...neither MIL nor her husband live there anymore. And they didn't receive any utility bills at this address or sign a lease. No bank statements either apparently. So, seems MIL is stuck in a situation where she can't actually provide the proof required to pay off/close her card without committing some sort of fraud. And in the meantime, the card is racking up debt and destroying her credit score with no recourse.
