I lived through that era and I definitely see some similarities, whereas many commenters here do not.  The best I can give you is that the AI race **feels** like the search engines war.  Then you had the likes of Altavista, Lycos, Yahoo, Ask Jeeves, Dog Pile, Google, etc.  All were vying for market share with nary a thought to how they would make money.  Google of course, won that war.

Now it’s OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, Google, Perplexity (though I view this one more as a derivative 2nd gen product), etc.  They have revenue but still are not making money yet.  Who will eventually win is anyone’s guess though I have to say OpenAI has a strong first mover advantage.

Back then, network equipment maker like Cisco, Lucent, Broadcom and to a lesser extent chipmaker Intel (though they had competition from AMD, Qualcomm, and Cyrus) were all the rage.  At that time Intel really seemed invincible.  Today it’s Nvidia.  The same matrix math that made them dominate the gaming world (and then crypto mining) and CUDA is helping them with AI.  Turns out computing vectors in parallel for layers of an LLM is very similar to taking complex 3D graphics scenes and mapping it to your 2D screen.  Who knew?

So the question is, will Nvidia maintain their dominance or will they become like Intel down the road?  TSMC is strong and so is AMD.  Who will win the hardware war and who will win the software war is anyone’s guess.

Some here has said AI is completely different than what happened back then.  I strongly disagree. Just like the Internet was revolutionary (we just didn’t quite know how), I think AI is the same but just as then, we don’t yet know how.  So **a lot** more similarities in my mind than differences.  My 2 cents for what it’s worth.

Edit: Lest people get confused, I distinguish between pure AI companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, etc. vs established companies with huge businesses elsewhere that are also investing in AI (like Microsoft, Meta, Google, etc.).  Those companies are very profitable but their AI divisions are most definitely not & losing money hand over fist.

I find that most people that talk about the latest framework doesn't actually know much about the framework, and just read about it on some substack article. Maybe used it on a small Hello World project. So they know what the framework or technology promises, but don't have a lot of experience in implementation. 


Your ability to adapt and debug will make you a valuable engineer. Knowing the latest technology isn't really as valuable as people think. Almost everything in the world is running in frameworks that are 10+ years old, and most companies rarely choose to rebuild to the latest just because it's trendy.

Well I didn't really build it from scratch but I setup automation using Frizerly for my company which scans our competitors top keywords they rank on Google and then automatically create content on our website around those same keywords to complete with them. It can also pick trending topics and create content around that on a daily basis. All we have to do is flip the switch from draft to published after reviewing it everyday. Ofcourse you can auto publish it as well, but I dont think we wanted that personally. A human review always helps for production automations haha!

Unfortunately - constant studying is expected due to the pace of release of new technology; been doing it for more than a decade and still have to constantly study. Also the worst feeling for me, is forgetting or being not as good at someone you were once great at due to not using much of it for a while (forgetting CSS for example because you were working on backend APIs for X years)

It's different. There are a few companies that are behaving in a similar way (PLTR, TSLA, and crypto stocks come to mind) but the overall market is quite a bit different. The top companies are rolling in cash and profits. During the tech boom/bust, literally anything with .com in the name was being bid up to insane levels, with no attention at all being paid to business fundamentals.

Wanted to say "thank you" to all who have replied and are replying. As someone just rolling into retirement this fall,  we're understandably a bit nervous.

1st, you are losing way more than $1700 a month. Rent minus mortgage does not equal your cash flow.

TBH, this is the realist update on resumes that I've seen in a while. So many peeps out here just sending in their resumes thinking they hit the mark, but nah, it ain't that simple. Sound weird but I use a tool that automatically plan my day every morning, using info from my emails, notes, todos and calendar. 

The tool called Saner and it's really helpful for my ADHD, cause I got tasks all over place and have a overview agenda reduces lots of mental bandwidth.

-Nobody has a crystal ball and nobody really knows when a good time to invest, but time in the market is much better than timing the market




-don't get all of your information in one place. Watch YouTube videos. Read books (rich dad poor dad is a great one) 




-any investment platform you choose will let your print a pdf (or paper) with all their relevant tax information. I use myfreetaxusa.com to file everything myself and it walks you through everything 


-Investing itself is usually free. Index funds tend to have an annual fee, but if it's less than a 10th of a percent then you're fine. I recommend opening your investment account at Fidelity or Vanguard as they are the gold standards for brokers


Instead of buying and selling repeatedly (known as trading) you're going to want to buy and hold (investing). Look up long and short capital gains taxes

Purely out of curiosity, what's the merchant name listed for those transactions? I'm always down for a puzzle instead of doing my actual work

Sell both your properties. Then ask yourself why you would willingly rent out properties at a loss?

Your probably bleeding more then $1700/mo when you include maintainance, management fees, and CapEx.

On the positive side your high income and can afford it, someone else is paying your mortgage down, your interest rates are lower then current rates, you get tax benefits. 

So now here are a few important questions to consider. 
Where are these located? 
Are they in A neighborhoods, new builds, with great schools, in or next to a metropolis that's growing quickly? 
What's the housing inventory look like in your area? Is supply coming on the market or is there a shortage of housing?
What type of market is it; growth or cash flow?
What does your year over year growth look like in terms of rental growth & appreciation? When do you break even? 
Can you house hack it? Do a BRRR, or find other ways to create value like adding an ADU?

1. Gonna have to do some bonus labor on your own time. It’s better than being a coal miner when  all of the nearby mines shutdown right? 

2. Support organized labor. Coal miners were right about that. I personally want us to be great, I want us to learn new things! I don’t want catastrophic layoffs due to boom/bust cycles. Corporations can afford retention/retraining, but they’re not just going to hand it over.

Do you need this money for anything?
Like you have any goals? 
like pay rent or buy a car?
If you don't need the money for the next 10 years definitely put it in an ETF 
If you need it in the next 2 years put it in a high out savings account or money market account

I think it’s ok honestly. My passion is my family. My career is for funding that passion.

Personally chose money/stability over my passion twice. I regret it, but it will depend on you. My current job is just very boring and I am too ambitious for it.

AI is in a bubble just like the the dotcom bubble in the year 2000. Internet is one of the greatest technological advancements of all time - but it was in a bubble because tons of investment flowed into it, companies over hired, and most companies just didn't make it. the ones that did changed the world forever

  
Same is happening with AI. Tons of investment flows in, but companies are doing the opposite with hiring. They are ***under hiring*** because of the expectation that AI will replace employees (it wont). So when pops, companies will rush to hire talent back up. I agree

I am probably worth in the ballpark of 3.4 million if you add it all up. It's mostly completely realized gains (3mil\~ inheritance), then about 400k worth of a 401k, an inherited Roth, partial ownership in an investment property, my own brokerage and my own Roth.

I don't know that it is enough to sustain my lifestyle forever (4% SWR) due to high rent currently, in VHCOL area. I mean, I think it probably is, but whatever. I grinded very hard for the part of my net worth that was not inherited; I have been into FI/RE for 5\~ years and Youtube finance guys for 7\~. I have never not worked since I was 18, even through college and on holidays. It's time.

So, I am telling everyone it is a gap year and I am telling myself that. I'm not a huge spender by nature so I'm just not worried. I am incredibly employable and can go back to it if need be, but I'll never be this young again. This sub is very obsessed with the total FI/RE and **never** working again. That is cool and I'm grateful to you all - but I might work again. We'll see!

Handed in My Resignation Last Month (30F; 3ish Million)

Now before you guys ask me if i am seeing this on social media, i am not. I dont use any form of social media whatsoever, everything I see is with my own two eyes. I have been wondering this for a long time and i cant make sense of it anymore. I live in a mid size city in canada ( not in ontario or bc) and I cant figure out what people here do for a living. I mean they are building dozens of subdivisions everywhere and thousands upon thousands of houses are being built asking for 600-2 mil and people buy them, mostly in cash. There are a dozen or so neighborhoods with thousands of 1-3 mil houses everywhere, everywhere I look people are driving teslas, bmws, audis, huge pickup trucks, corvettes etc. The college I go to seems to be filled with rich people as well, which doesnt make sense how its everyone.

I even went to toronto a few months ago and I was asking the same thing. Every person seems to be super rich. I mean every house in toronto is over a mil to like 8 figures for mansions and all hotels around me were sold out, the airports were full 24/7 and every place was packed with people spending huge amounts of money on things. But in general, airports are full, concerts and sports games are sold out every time, malls are crowded with people spending thousands of dollars on things and people seem to be travelling 24/7. I know you could say maybe its debt, but if it was, we would see personal debt levels higher than usual, and yet they are stagnant. I even think about cities like new york where the majority of people are renters and yet the average rent is easily over 4k for a studio to like 12k for a 3 bedroom, yet millions of people still afford it, but the average income stats dont make sense for the rent. It just seems like everyone these days makes between like 300k-10 mil a year to be able to afford this lifestyle and everyone seems to have 8 figure plus net worths to achieve this because if thats not the case, then how are they doing it? This is not a rant, its more about how I think something else is going on underneath the surface and income and net worth stats dont show the full picture. What do you guys think?

how does everyone have so much money when jobs pay average?

I’m paying 14k a month and after all over head I’m coming away with 5-  7.k .  a month. Give or take initially. But I’ve managed to clean the place up and increase revenue .
I put down 100k good willl plus 90 inventory.  
I think I’m getting rammed.  Going to ask for rent to go to 10k and arrange some sort of purchase instead of lease.  It’s my father in law. So I have some leeway.

I currently work in biotech and emotionally just tired. The constant fear of lay offs, having to move around for work since most jobs are concentrated in a few areas, the low salaries. Im considering making a switch to something more stable in healthcare.

Anybody make a switch later in life and how did that turn out for you?

I've racked up \~£63,000 on a four year biology degree, and have now secured a job paying \~£37.5k per year.

Most people say to just ignore their student loan, but £63k with 6.2% compound interest could get pretty nasty no? I don't even want to imagine what international students have to pay off.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

24F, this year I hit a bit over $100k in net worth, broken down:

$38k - in 401k
$31k - Roth IRA
$9k - in HSA ($8k invested, $1k liquid)
$15.5k - individual brokerage (wide basket of investments, mostly S&P, but also some individual stocks) 
$8k - HYSA

Car is completely paid off
No debt besides apartment rent of ~$1500 in HCOL city

I was making $83k (+10% bonus)for the past year and half, just started making $95k (+20% bonus) this past month. 

For context, I grew up low income, student loan debt free due to scholarship, worked all through high school and college to save enough to not have a car loan and build a bit of a safety net. 

I’m curious how can I scale to $1m by 30 (if possible)? Should I try investing in businesses? Having a bit of identity crisis, would it be crazy to quit working for a year to travel or how can I create passive income streams? Am I on track generally to be secure in retirement or possibly retire early in my 40s/50s?

I’d like to buy a home in my 30s, but no other major expenses anticipated. Would appreciate any advice!


Edit: thank you for all the constructive advice. To clarify, I wasn’t saying all three goals at once. Itd likely be hunker down and try to hit $1m or push that out to late 30s and take some time off. okay so fair $1m by 30 is not as likely, that makes sense. Sounds like saving and investing your way, is the only way.

Hit $100k net worth, how can I scale to $1m? General advice

I started my company in 2023, and this year we're projected to hit somewhere between $1M and $1.5M in revenue. My goal of hitting $3-$5M in the next 3 years is very achievable at our current rate of growth. I'm going to give you the reality of starting and growing a business to $1M in 3 years, without sugar-coating it. If I burst some bubbles and dash some hopes with this post, then I've done my job. I won't divulge what my industry is because I'm discussing general business principles that apply to any industry. Different industries have different barriers to entry, and some businesses can scale faster than others. In Silicon Valley, hitting $1M in 3 years is pathetic. High growth tech startups can hit $10M three years after launch, but the barriers to entry in the industry are high. I'm speaking to the average person who wants to open a restaurant, launch a product or start a service business. What does it really take to build a successful company and scale it to $1M?

1. Money. This is the hard truth nobody wants to hear. It takes money to start and scale a business, any business. I made an initial investment of $20k to get my business going. $20k is not a lot of money in the startup world. Most businesses require much more to get off the ground, but many wantrepreneurs are unable or unwilling to risk even minimal capital to get a real operation going. Can you start a business without investing a lot of money? Sure, but you're not going to scale your business to $1M quickly without starting capital. You're competing with other businesses that already have money to burn on marketing, operations, staffing and product/service development. If you don't have money or outside capital to launch a business, then you need to do it the old-fashioned way: work hard, live cheap and save. That might take years, but if immigrants who came to America with $3 in their pocket can start a dry cleaner or c-store this way, you can save money to start your business too.

2. Marketing. I don't care how amazing your product/service is, if you can't get paying customers in the door, to your website, or on the phone, your business will go nowhere. This is probably the hardest part of getting a business off the ground. Marketing is mostly pay-to-play, so if you're just hoping to scale by building an organic social media following or going door-to-door, you will have a hard time growing to $1M. Developing a marketing plan that works requires a lot of trial and error. Whatever strategy you initially thought would win customers probably won't work as expected. You need to try a variety of marketing channels, track your ROIs, drop the ones that don't work, and invest more into the ones that do. Once you find a marketing strategy that works, it's like having a free money machine. The more you put into marketing, the more you make; The more you make, the more you can put into marketing, ad infinitum. However, the process of fine-tuning your marketing strategy will be difficult and costly. You need to be prepared to burn a lot of money on things that don't work, and always be ready to adapt and change your strategy. 

3. People. You can get a business going by yourself, but as you scale to $1M, you're going to need employees. In most industries, you probably can't handle a $1M operation by yourself. Too many business owners get stuck in the cycle of trying to do everything themselves, and their business stagnates as a result. Think of a new employee as an investment. They will cost you money in the beginning, but in time, a good employee will help grow your business and provide a return on your investment. Once you've built a good team, you need to learn how to delegate.  When you harness the power of delegation, an effectively managed employee is like making a copy of yourself. If you got your business to $250k by yourself, a two-person team can get you to $500k, three people to $750k, etc. (it's really not that simple, but you get the idea). You can't be in the trenches with your employees forever. As your business grows, you have to step out of the trenches so you can survey the battlefield, strategize and lead your troops. This is how you scale to $1M and beyond. I couldn't have done it without my team, and they couldn't have done it without effective leadership.

Starting a business and growing it to $1M is insanely difficult. I know from hard experience that most of you will not succeed. Most wantrepreneurs won't get anything substantial off the ground at all, and of those that do, many will fail after a few years. This is simply the reality of entrepreneurship. However, if you are able to succeed, the satisfaction of building something scratch, being captain of your own ship, and reaping the reward of your hard work is the best feeling in the world.

0 to $1M in 3 years: What it really takes

Question is basically the title, I’ve been waiting for the rate cut to happen soon, and it seems like September will finally be that time. I will say I have a large portfolio, so I’m really hoping make good gains from a rally from now to EOY. (1.2 million in year to year gains is the goal) To secure my one year goal of gains. Now let’s say there is a rate cut this month after the fed meet, how much of a rally can we realistically expect and for how long?

As someone born into an Asian family, I grew up under constant pressure to get good grades and fill my schedule with volunteer work. In the end, that discipline paid off—I was directly admitted to a professional healthcare program, the kind of path that virtually guarantees job security. The trade-off, though, was that I had to commit to a career with 24/7 on-call responsibilities and constant mental stress.

Fast forward nine years: I’m now 28, earning about $95k pre-tax. I live with my parents in Washington, so I don’t pay for rent or food. On top of that, I’ve never really had hobbies—partly because I’ve had no time to develop them. The upside? I’ve managed to save around $700k.

I built a projection chart assuming 5% annual growth. If things go as planned, I should hit $1.5M by 35 and $2M by 40, which is more than enough to support a $70k annual withdrawal. To me, that seems like a ticket to financial freedom.

But here’s where I feel conflicted. Whenever I share these thoughts with friends or family, the reaction is almost always a facepalm emoji or a flat “no.” They say they’d be miserable without work—even my parents. But I honestly can’t imagine doing this for another 30 years. I don’t think my body—or my mind—would thank me for it.

So here I am, doing a reality check. Am I being unreasonable? Or is it fair to admit that I want something different out of life than grinding away until I’m 60? Am I wrong for wanting to walk away early?

$700k Saved by 28: My Plan to Retire by 35

I missed the 2000 bust but started working in 2008, right in the thick of the housing crisis. I saved and invested small amounts, so I didn’t really feel the downturn—ended up buying near the bottom. The Covid slump and tariffs were just minor bumps; the market bounced back quickly.

Now with this bull run, I see lots of talk about early retirement. It makes me wonder if this feels like the 1995-1999 dot-com boom before the crash.

For those who lived through the dot-com era, what similarities or differences do you see?

I'm 29 and single, looking to purchase a home in the next coming months. Looking at places going for ~380k in PA. I can lower my 401k contribution from 20% to 10% (I have ~300k in retirement funds already).


I have enough (and extra) for a down payment. I have $100k in savings and around $70k in brokerage I can tap into for emergencies. I feel like it would be doable for me to handle a $2.5k payment (whatever the number you see on Zillow makes up). But people around me are telling me I will end up house poor. 


I have 0 debt to my name. Car is paid off, no student loan debt. I make around $130k gross pay. Would this be a mistake? I was getting excited feeling I was quite ready, but people and online talk is making me feel like I'm in over my head.


Edit: I realized I left out some info. I have some variable bonuses that happen twice a year, that's an extra 10-15k extra per year, on top of the monthly 5k.

been coding professionally for 6 years, mostly backend stuff with some full-stack thrown in. recently though i feel like im drowning and its freaking me out. everyone around me is constantly talking about AI tools, cloud-native architecture, frameworks ive never even heard of. i mean i still know my shit, but it feels like im running on a treadmill just to not become completely irrelevant. worse part is i cant tell if its actually me falling behind or if this industry just moves so fast that EVERYONE feels this way and nobody wants to admit it.

i love solving problems but lately i spend more mental energy trying not to look stupid in standups than actually building anything meaningful. for those who are further along in their careers...how the hell do you deal with this constant feeling of "learn everything or get left behind"?

I have two credit cards through the bank I have my checking account with. Today two pending charges for $0 showed up on both cards (four pending charges total) from some company I never heard of... I haven't purchased anything recently that hasn't already posted and been paid off. One of the cards in particular, I never use for anything, it was my first credit card from years ago with no rewards or anything, I haven't used it at all since like 2022.

I called my bank to ask about the pending charges and the customer support rep I got told me not to worry about it since all the charges were for $0, saying it was probably a merchant checking if my cards were still active. I asked if they could give me any additional information about who was doing it and why? They said they couldn't see anymore than I could, just repeating the name of the company as it appeared in my list of pending charges. I then pointed out how I never even use one of the cards, so I didn't know how this merchant would even have that card information in the first place. The rep continued being incredulous towards my concerns so I just asked to cancel the cards and have them replaced.

Any idea what was going on here? I have seen pending/pre-authorized charges for $0/$1 from vendors I have used before, but that happened when I actually made a transaction with said vendor.  I haven't made any transactions recently and have no idea who this company was.  Normally I would think my credit card just got compromised somehow, but the fact that it also happened to a card that I haven't even taken out of my wallet in 3+ years has me puzzled...

I’m a girl in my late 20s and honestly didn’t think this through enough. I’ve realized I don’t even enjoy being a landlord . I hate tenant communication, I hate the constant expenses, and I feel like I’ve tied myself down financially. At this point I’m debating whether I should sell both and take the hit, or keep holding and hope appreciation/rent increases make it worth it.

**Summary/profile**  
very useful if done right. don’t give recruiters fluff like “hardworking team player.” what they want in 3–4 lines is what role you’re targeting and why you’re relevant. think of it as a trailer for your career. if they can’t understand your direction in 6 seconds, they’ll probably skip. a clear summary helps me picture you in the role faster.

this is 80% of my attention. they scan job titles first (do they align with the role they're hiring for?). then company names (have you worked in similar environments?). after that they read bullets — and here’s the secret: they don’t want to see duties, they want to see results. “responsible for managing inventory” = weak. “managed $500k inventory, reduced shrinkage by 15%” = strong. numbers, outcomes, scope. if you give them that, you instantly rise above the pile.

**Skills**  
recruiters and applicant tracking systems both scan this. if the role calls for sql and python and neither shows up here, your resume might never get seen, even if you used them. keep this section lean and relevant — 8–12 skills max, not a wall of buzzwords. be honest, but don’t undersell either. the skills section impacts whether you make it through ats filters.

**Education**  
for early career folks, they check gpa (if strong), coursework, and projects. for mid-career, they glance at the degree and move on. don’t bury recruiters in every class you took unless you’ve just graduated. what matters is: do you meet the educational bar for the role, yes or no. simple.

**Extras (projects, certs, volunteering)**  
this is where you can stand out if you’ve got a gap or you’re early in your career. side projects show initiative, certs show effort to stay current, volunteering can highlight leadership and teamwork. this is your bonus round.. most people skip it, which is why it can make you memorable.

**The impact on your job search**  
recruiters scan hundreds of resumes fast. they don’t read, they skim for signals. every section either earns you a closer look or gets you tossed aside. weak header = doubt. fluffy summary = skipped. duty-based experience = passed over. strong impact bullets, relevant skills, and proof of initiative = interview pile. in a market where hundreds apply for one role, how you build each section directly decides whether you get that call back or not.

every section of your resume matters, here’s how recruiters actually look at it (and what they want to see?).

I’m at a point where I don’t love the profession I’m in but I’m also not sure leaving is the right move. It’s stable the bills are covered most months and even though I’m not making a ton I don’t have the stress of wondering where my next paycheck is coming from and sometimes I even remind myself how lucky I am to have security when so many people dont. Part of me does wonder if I’m missing out by not taking risks or chasing something more creative but the other part feels like stability is underrated. Having a steady routine and knowing I can take care of myself has its own kind of peace. Has anyone else stuck with a job that wasn’t their passion but chose to value the security instead, do you feel it was the right call in the long run?

Choosing stability over chasing passion was it the right move?

I'm 17 and I have about 20k sitting in a checking account/little metal box in my parents room (yes I know how ridiculous it is). No one is my family knows what investing is or how it works. We live comfortably but my parents don't have anything to keep after each paycheck. Its always been like this. Im also the first in my family to start college this year.
     I want to invest for my future, but im a little lost on how to do that. Obviously im slowy educating myslef starting today on investments. I want to start now so I have a decent amount for my 30s. That's when I plan on buying a house. I want to invest my 20k and then start doing a monthly amount. Im looking not at stocks but at the things we're its 500 companies in one. Im aiming for the least amount of risk.
       My questions is how does taxed work in all this? Will it even be worth it if I get taxed when im buying/keeping/selling? Also I heard somewhere that its the worst time to start investing because Trump is messing stuff up? But does that not matter because im willing to ride out the ups and the downs until my mid thirties. And is there anything you want to add? Who would you recommend I watch on YouTube get a better idea of all this?
