My organization is starting to treat their seasoned engineers like morons, and it’s evident they’re trying to run them off and hire a new wave of college grads / offshores for half the price.

They’ve been doing this for a half decade now and the tech debt is through the roof.  80% of every new “feature” has to go through the “how can we make this work with our extremely coupled poorly documented system” that eats through labor costs like a starving shark though surfers on their period, and they think it’s a “dev efficiency” issue.

They’re toast so anybody they like enough to retain and give autonomy to is trying to leave anyways, cause the compensation sucks and management isn’t trustworthy.  I’m bailing in 2-3 months max

I got let go. It was a seven minute conversation that consisted of them blabbing about a reduction and workforce and the economy. I have 45 days to sign the paperwork, but it kind of is what it is at this point. Man this sucks.

HR rep was sharing her screen and accidentally shared a spreadsheet with every person getting let go and there was quite a bit. I knew I was a target because they didn’t give me a raise this year - they said I was over my bracket already. Instead, I got a check for the percentage in lump. That right there tells me that they weren’t looking at me like a long-term employee anyway.

I’ve seen so many founders brag about “shipping fast” only to launch half-baked products nobody sticks with. An MVP isn’t just something minimal; it’s something minimal and viable. I run a directory website for manufacturers that currently lists over 11,000 companies. When I first started years ago, I did everything manually personally reaching out to each manufacturer to include their information. I worked extremely hard over the years to keep the data accurate and up to date.

At one point, the site was generating around $4,000 per month through ads. The website is free for users, and I charge manufacturers a small fee to appear at the top of the listings. I relied solely on SEO to attract both new users and new manufacturers.

However, things have changed. The keywords I worked so hard to rank for no longer bring in traffic. Now, when people search for those terms, Google shows all the companies directly in the search results, bypassing my site.

I even tested modifying my site by hiding data from Google to prevent snippets from appearing. But Google’s AI still crawled my site, extracted the data it needed, and displayed it in the search results while most of my internal pages disappeared from rankings. I lost a significant number of keyword positions.

In effect, Google is forcing me to keep this data visible or risk losing all visibility in search results.

What should I do?

I’m not just running a directory website I provide detailed, hard to find information such as min/max order quantities, copies of manufacturing certificates, and whether a manufacturer is currently available or operating at full capacity. 

This kind of data isn’t available anywhere else online, not even on the manufacturers’ own websites, all these info are collected manually by contacting them.

There are thousands of good manufacturers out there, but many of them don’t know how to represent themselves online. Some haven’t updated their websites in over six years.

Google steals 90% of my revenue

An org I work for desperately needs Data Engineers and ML Ops savvy people. They would be reporting to me, but they pass through my manager first in the interview process before the candidates can get to me. 

I found a really weird? Coincidence? Maybe? Somehow all 8 of the last interviews I’ve had are with female candidates.  That ratio seems… off.. considering the last survey for similar job titles we had 95% males who applied. 

Idk if we wants to have this all-woman team, but he’s even passed a woman who came from a marketing degree background, worked for 3 years, did a data science bootcamp and has no cloud experience for a heavy pipeline/engineering role with a lot of early deliverables. 

I feel like the manager is possibly filtering out some of the good male candidates like you’re telling me out of 1000+ people who applied that we could only find this lady who only barely has any knowledge on data warehousing? 

Just frustrated at this overall.. I declined 3 people he approved so far, but based on the remaining 5 resumes, they are all not qualified for the job

Male 51, FIREd right before turning 50 - so it's been about a year now. Born in Malaysia, did my adulting in the US. I soft-retired first because I wasn't certain I was financially ready. Truth is, I probably could have pulled the trigger at 47/48, but you never really know, do you?

Different world then - married, working as a self-employed US-based tech consultant, fully remote. Then life happened. Divorced this past year, gave up half my net worth. Went nomadic, let my whims dictate my travels. Bittersweet moments, since it wasn't with the partner I'd shared 20+ years with.

Relocated back to Malaysia to spend time with my aging parents. Lost my mom a week after returning home. Now I'm a full-time caregiver to my dad and my brother (who has Down Syndrome), with occasional respite breaks.

*Everyday is like Sunday,* as Morrissey sang (Though I like the Karen Souza rendition of it). Life happens when you're busy making other plans.

**What I've learned about myself and this life I've made:**

* **There is no magic number** \- you can always adjust your lifestyle to make it fit. The flexibility is more important than hitting some arbitrary target.
* **Quarterly cash flow reviews are essential** \- I'm adjusting my cash holdings every three months to maintain a 2-year buffer. Nothing is predictable anymore, at least not in the near to mid-term. The fixed and familiar expenses I got used to have changed.
* **Healthcare costs are ridiculous** \- My GeoBlue Global Expat Insurance plan (with US coverage) runs \~$800 USD/month. It's currently my biggest expense. I'm researching local options to optimize. Wish I'd gotten into an HSA earlier on, but surprisingly, unavailable in a lot of plans lately. E.g. The State of Illinois has no qualified ACA plans available this year.
* **Isolation is real and dangerous** \- Between not working and relocating internationally, losing that daily socialization hits harder than I expected. Plan for it actively, don't just hope it works out.
* **Find your passion or keep exploring** \- It's frighteningly easy to drift through days, even when care-giving fills most of my time. Without the structure of work, you need something else driving you forward. I've been taking different classes/sessions (social sports, language classes etc.), haven't found mine yet, but the search fills up my time.
* **Diversify your financial infrastructure** \- I've been at Vanguard primarily, plan to split things out to have a backup brokerage, in case I get locked out of one for whatever reason. Same with banking.

**The numbers, for those curious:**

Post-divorce reality check - she got the house, I kept the liquid assets. No car (haven't needed one in 5+ years), no fixed assets beyond what fits in my luggage.

* **Retirement accounts:** IRA $1.1M, Roth $160K. Planning annual conversions for 4 more years to optimize tax brackets and get more into the Roth. Portfolio is mostly VTI/VTSAX with \~5% international (VEA/VWO).
* **Brokerage:** $1.5M, primarily VTI/VTSAX. Some VDADX I'm winding down, plus surprise NVDA gains I'm gradually taking profits on.
* **Cash:** $120K in VMFXX/SWVXX - my 2-year buffer I mentioned.

Living on credit cards, paying off monthly for the points and cash flow management. Total liquid NW around $2.78M in this LCOL environment. Will draw down the brokerage, until I can touch retirement, then balance things out from there.

I'm sure there are more lessons I'll think of. So far, things haven't quite gone down the path I thought they would, but I'm still glad I went down this journey. Wish I could have done it sooner, when my health was better, and the care obligations were lesser.

But today, as I write this, I am on a respite break, sitting on a porch, overlooking the Andaman sea. Sound of the waves playing in the background, and the ocean breeze on my face. And it feels good. It feels like Sunday.

either that or it's someone who's unemployed and freaking out because applying for jobs is hard and stressful.

these people are overrepresented in this subreddit because "i like my job okay" is not a very interesting post to write or to read. totally valid for students and unemployed people to participate, obviously, but it would be helpful for everyone (regardless of who they are) to see at a glance just how many of the doom-and-gloom posts are written by people in that situation.

I was updating my net worth spreadsheet and realized I’m at $3M USD! Wow! I just turned 40 this week. To top it off, I’m getting a promotion at work even though I’ve been trying to quit this job for 2 years. Not sure what I’m going to do about this job long-term, but I guess I’ll stick it out for a few more weeks.

Reached $3M net worth

My mom was struggling financially at the beginning of the year, and she asked me to take out a loan to prevent us from becoming homeless. Despite paying her $500 every month, she was still short on money. My dad also had a job, so I don’t understand how they could be so financially illiterate. However, the bank refused to give me a loan because I’m only 19 years old, so my mom forced me to take out several non-bank loans. Over the course of half a year, she made me take out a whopping $10,000. Otherwise, we would have been homeless. Now, I have to pay back $25,000 (including interest) and monthly payments amount to $1,000. I was furious when she suggested that I take out another loan and then declare bankruptcy on myself. She promised to pay for it and handle it, but I’m furious and don’t know what to do. She doesn’t take accountability for anything, even when it comes to my decision to drop out of high school because of their financial problems. She ruined my younger years with this, and I wanted to start online school to finish my education, but now I can’t because of the debt. I can’t even afford my driving license, which I wanted. I’m trapped in this situation and have no way out. 

My parents put me in debt and I’m trapped.

I handed in my resignation today.
I’ve had enough of this corporate culture where skill and hard work mean nothing when it’s your son against a loyal, competent employee.
I gave 4 years of my life, countless days spent working late, fixing things, perfecting every project. Got honorariums and appreciation three years in a row.
But when it was finally time for a promotion, the CTO’s son got the chair. Just graduated. Meanwhile, I’d been promised that promotion for two years. I couldn’t take it anymore.
On the way out, the CTO told me I was nothing without them.
But I know I’m good at what I do. I’m a solid designer, and clients liked working with me. Not just the logos I made, but me .
So here I am. No job. No plan. Not going back to a 9-to-5. I’m going freelance, offering logo design and brand identity work.
There’s just one think. My old clients keep calling. They want to work with me directly now. But I had a non-compete.
Over half of that company’s brand identity clients want me to do their work.
I know the CTO won’t like that.

Im 17 turning 18 in a couple days. But anyways Ive applied endlessly had about 10 interviews and re-did my resume a few times but I still got nothing. Anyone else struggling? 

Why is it so hard to get a job?

My company is getting rid of our fleet account to switch to a vehicle stipend. This means I will lose a car that I have a gas card for, all repairs, oil changes etc all covered. If it breaks down I get a rental etc. i don’t have any details yet as to the amount of the stipend but they said it will be a similar cost value to what the current vehicles we drive cost, likely have some yearly stipend for registration costs etc. we get to pick our vechicles but they need to have certain criteria ie 4 doors (no 2 door sedans) have awd/4wd for winter months.

I would like to have some talking points to bring up to leadership and make sure I’m not missing anything.

• we now have a financial burden of a lease or loan added to our credit

• worry about repairs, who pays? 

• worry about regular maintenance (oil changes)

• mileage, we will be reimbursed but if we lease a vehicle there is an chance we go over. Who pays the overage? We are a sales team so we travel a lot. 20k-30k miles a year in some cases. 

• if my car needs repairs and i dont have a vehicle does the company give us a rental? 

Can anyone think of anything I may be missing like additional costs I’m not thinking of?

Company getting rid of fleet vehichles

Are there any industries known to be hardy and resilient hiring and layoff wise to recession?

I feel like working software at a HFT firm might be good, they tend to make profit during market volatility 

Are there any industries that often hire software engineers that are considered recession resilient?

My husband and I bought a cottage with my brother and SIL 5 years ago and we clearly have different thoughts on how ownership works to put it nicely. The cottage is nothing fancy at all, paid $25k for it and needed a lot of love and care, including a lot of handy work from some one which ended up being my husband. Long story short, they are unable to communicate with us about literally anything and we are ready to walk away. 

Looking for advice or thoughts on this. Can we ask them to buy us out? We are thinking $15k is reasonable due to the amount of money we've each put into repairs and also it could sell for way more if we listed it, maybe $50-60k. They also have no money (3 kids in daycare) so I don't expect them to have $15k immediately, should we ask for a payment plan like $200/mo for 6 years or straight up tell them to get a loan to pay us? We're family and as much as we haven't gotten along, I don't want to be a complete dick or force them to sell because they don't have money. It's also next to my parents place that my brother and I grew up with and they still have so selling isn't really an option. Any better ideas? We haven't floated the idea with them yet but I think we both know this joint ownership isn't working. I would offer to buy them out but this is probably the only opportunity they have to have a reasonably priced vacation for their kids and they love it here.

I tried to respond to many of the comments but this blew up much more than I expected! Again thank you, I'm going to enjoy my weekend at the cottage and step away from this at the moment but I feel a lot better about what to do next.

After building dozens of SaaS MVPs for clients over the past few years, I've reached a controversial conclusion: the whole "ship an MVP and iterate" mentality is actually ruining more products than it's helping.

I know this goes against everything you hear in startup circles, but hear me out.

Every client comes to me with the same request: "We need an MVP, something basic we can launch in 6-8 weeks, then we'll add features based on user feedback." Sounds reasonable, right? Wrong.

Here's what actually happens 90% of the time:

The client launches their bare-bones MVP. Users try it once, maybe twice, then bounce because it doesn't actually solve their problem completely. The client panics, thinking they need more users or better marketing. They never get the chance to iterate because nobody sticks around long enough to give meaningful feedback.

Meanwhile, their competitors who took 6 months to build something that actually works are eating their lunch.

The real problem? Most people misunderstand what MVP actually means. They think it's "build the smallest thing possible." It's not. It's "build the smallest thing that delivers COMPLETE value for a specific use case."

Big difference.

I've seen clients lose months of runway because they launched a task management app that couldn't handle file attachments, or an analytics dashboard that couldn't export data. These aren't "nice to have" features - they're deal-breakers disguised as iterations.

The worst part? When I suggest taking an extra month to build these core features, clients push back because some guru told them "speed to market beats perfection." But there's nothing speedy about launching something that immediately gets ignored.

Here's what I've learned building MVPs that actually succeed:

Your MVP should feel complete within its scope, even if that scope is narrow. A great email tool that only does newsletters is better than a mediocre tool that tries to do everything poorly.

Users don't care about your iteration timeline. They care about whether your product solves their problem today. If it doesn't, they won't come back to check if you've improved it.

The feedback you get from an incomplete product is usually garbage. People will tell you what's missing, not whether they'd actually pay for it if those things existed.

Look, I'm not advocating for waterfall development or spending years building in stealth. But this obsession with shipping incomplete products as fast as possible is just as destructive.

The companies that win aren't necessarily the fastest to market, they're the ones that ship something people actually want to keep using.

Sometimes that means saying no to clients who want to launch before their product is ready. Sometimes it means pushing back on timelines. But it always means focusing on delivering real value instead of just checking the "we launched" box.

The irony? When you take time to build something solid upfront, you actually iterate faster later because you have engaged users giving you real feedback instead of explaining why they left after five minutes.

Maybe it's time we stopped treating "MVP" like it means "unfinished product" and started building things that are genuinely minimum but still viable.

The MVP myth is destroying good products

I work at a fairly established but small company that had about 200 people when I started. Now it’s down to about 120. No layoffs but there’s been some people singled out and fired, and a ton of churn.  I suspect a lot of problems here are happening in the industry as a whole. 

For product and eng it’s 100% driven by low engagement and burnout. I only started here in August but it’s been a straight trend of just doing everything wrong. New product leader came in around when I did. Slowly ripped away any authority that ICs/managers have to define their scope or what to prioritize. It’s extremely top-down, do whatever the cofounders want now, and that was fairly insulated when I started. They’ve pushed out any and all leadership that were a source of any friction at the top, and I think they saw this new leader they hired was gonna validate anything they say. Now it’s only yes-people in the room. Teams and reorgs constantly happen at whims of leadership without really consulting anyone. This then impacts roadmap items but the expectations don’t change. Roadmap itself is never even really committed too, cause they change priorities there all the time, you never know when or why the thing you were working on for three weeks will get deprioritized. You also don’t know when something you thought you’d do a month later you’re now expected to present a prototype of at the end of the week. A lot of expected overtime work, not a lot of pay or advancement opportunity. Definitely a lack of clarity or support on directions given. I’ve seen people ask valid questions get put on PIPs basically. 

As a designer I can definitely say this is not a place I expect to do great work or anything I can really showcase. The top down mandate is quite simply, AI-wash the product. I worked on a project with that mandate, just impossible constraints and no scope clarity. So I had to challenge that team to really turn this into something that customers would value and pay for and set a small target. With the full support and backing of my manager we really pushed to make sure it’s at least providing real value to the user, compromised as quickly as possible when necessary to unblock Eng (we were all building the plane while flying it). We really inserted ourselves so that we don’t make terrible UX decisions even and especially when that made things a little harder. Worked really hard on it, set a bar for quality. Executives swooped in last two weeks before launch and started asking for tons of changes, same timeline. So, lost time QAing there that really would have made a difference. Delayed the launch. They freaked out and blamed everyone they were pushing to work 80 hour weeks for a month to get this done. An eng quit on the spot which I applaud. Sure enough it launched and immediately sold enough to make the company profitable for its first quarter in like two years. Did we get any additional respect or acknowledgement, maybe some trust and respect for our process? lol. Well, that product leader got all the credit somehow despite having very little involvement. They got a promotion, and my manager, the one really backing me up challenging them and the team, got demoted, so no design voice in the leadership room now. This is the same product leader who’s entire staff either quit or been let go since they joined, and a replacement hired for most of them. Despised by everyone in product, design, and eng now. Yet, great at rubbing shoulders with management and pleasing them. Way too small of a company for politics like that to really work, but sure enough they convinced founders that they’re the goat. 

They have multiple engagement surveys where we’ve basically flatlined to zero on product side since that leader started. Feedback has been given calling out leadership as the source. None of the driving behavior changed or was addressed by them, it only got worse. Then Eng started to feel the impact of this over the last 6 months. A lot of them started quitting, the best ones that had been there longest and had most domain knowledge. most recent engagement shows a big dip for them now too. Def cannot replace them faster than they quit right now and it’s an existential risk. It’s looking like the ship is gonna sink itself here. 

I’m also just wondering if there’s greener grass or is this just how the industry is gonna be for a while? Business idiots running everything into the ground with zero accountability, and ICs treated like disposable resources who can be replaced by AI if they go. It’s frustrating cause if they actually empowered us a bit more, we have the talent and means of making a great product that actually sells, but it’s like their own egos take priority and they can’t conceive of anyone knowing the business opportunities worth investing in other than themselves. Down to the micromanaged details, like they don’t trust or value the expertise they hired. 



Anyone else seeing a mass exodus in their company?

I went to the PTV concert in Concord on 6/25 and I set a budget for myself since I’m a broke college student and live paycheck to paycheck. I set a limit of $80 and I stayed in that.

I got my girlfriend and I drinks for $50, I spent $10 in cash on a churro (it was ass btw), and finally I got a poster listed at $20 and the merch girl said my total was $21 something.

I later saw a notification from my bank that I was charged $142. I thought maybe they double charged for the concert tickets so I went to my order history and it didn’t align with the price of the tickets. Okay, rules that out. Then I noticed I didnt see the poster charge for $21 and the description said “merchandise & apparel” so great… I got charged $142 for just a POSTER.

I contacted my bank and they said I may not get it disputed because I don’t have a receipt—merch girl didn’t offer one and I didn’t ask for one because it’s not like clothing I’d wanted a change in size for or anything… The venue has weird hours so I emailed the supervisor and am going to call the box office when they reopen calls in 4 days. If the venue doesn’t get back to me and or doesn’t work with me on this what can I do? Should I tell my bank that $142 was spent on something without my consent then?

Kind of freaking out right now because I got an impromptu meeting with my bosses boss and the VP of HR in a few hours. It’s a Friday so of course I’m thinking the worst and also a payday. Kind of strange that my immediate boss isn’t in the meeting though and I just had a performance review a few weeks ago with no negative comments. I’m up-to-date on my work and haven’t gotten any negative feedback in the two years I’ve been here so I’m a little thrown off by this.
