Looking at the requirements (i.e. considerations) that you've listed, I would recommend a tiered approach. You'll want to store most of your emergency fund in a money-market fund (MMF), and slowly move portions of it into Series I saving bonds (I-Bonds).

Money-market funds are the safest investment option for an emergency fund outside of a high-yield savings account. Unlike some of the other commenters, I'd prioritize safety and ease-of-access over returns - you don't want to be taking investment risk on your emergency fund, since that's for emergencies. This is why I'd recommend against a bond fund because of the interest-rate risk.

So I would begin by depositing $90.0k USD in a money-market fund of your choice - you'll have different options depending on who your brokerage is. I use Charles Schwab, so the ticker for their MMF is `SWVXX` but other brokerages like Fidelity have their own equivalents. 

Next, I would use the final $10.0k USD to purchase I-Bonds from TreasuryDirect. That's the official U.S. Treasury site. I-Bonds have an advantage of having a floating interest rate that is designed to match inflation. Well, plenty of people make great, tax sheltered cash flow on real estate. My entire portfolio was spun up using debt and I've seen appreciation and rent growth over the last 2 decades change the economics for the better.

I have invested almost no personal cash into my deals over the year - so even when (if) I do sell, paying taxes on those gains as worst case scenario isn't that bad since most of the equity came from nothing. 

THATS why real estate is a good investment IMO - cause you can use cheap fixed rate debt to acquire properties, generate tax advantaged cash flow while you own it, and it generates equity over time. 

It does takes skill, know how, hard work and some luck, which might not be everyones cup of tea.

BIG IF… If you’re on the same page with the fire plan. A spouse can also make it much much more difficult.

I'm a citizen of a country where you can earn high salaries, she's a citizen of a country with a low cost of living. Now we're citizens of both. Earn it here, spend it there with no visa issues.

The sweet spot for someone investing in real estate is having a W2 income less than passive loss deduction threshold, buying well built income producing 1-4 unit residential properties in steadily appreciating regions, which have landlord favorable laws and acceptable taxes, and holding for the long term to reap the full benefits of appreciation, cash flow, and passive loss deductions. All the while still having a W2 income, and the tax liability on that is offset by the passive loss deduction and maxing out 401K and HSA. Also should be maxing out Roth IRA as well. The untaxed cash flow from the rental properties allows you to max out these retirement accounts and still live very comfortably.

There’s nothing special about entrepreneurship. The hardest part for most people is simply starting. It’s not reserved for geniuses—it’s for anyone willing to take a step forward. The reason most people don’t give a shit about the companies they work for is because they’re not allowed to have any ownership or control over the business. The corporate model is dying. The future is a federation of worker-owned cooperatives, like the Mondragon Cooperatives in Spain.

Personally I found that time off isn't the cure to that feeling. 

I felt that way because I was bored with the tasks that I was doing, paired with the realization that the tasks won't change in the near or even distant future. Even if I only have 2 hours of work a day. It's general unfulfillment.

My solution has always been to build stuff on the side in my free time. I find things that I'm passionate about, and and directly interact with the people that have the problems that I can solve with software. 

Enthusiasm is contagious, but in companies as a developer you rarely interact with your customers directly. That isn't true when you build things yourself. And the energy that that fills you with spills over into your day-to-day in all aspects of life.

Edit: goal is a big one too. It's truly hard to care about the goal of a company you work for, because the larger the company the less you feel integral to it. But when a goal is yours, you let it consume you and it fills you with motivation.

So I am a software engineer II currently at a tech company, and how much this sub has changed is crazy to me in the past 3 years since I graduated. 

Why is everything so depressing? Why are positive posts suppressed with downvotes and posts that highlight people’s success just labeled as “humble bragging” or “showing off”.

That success used to motivate people, now the only posts here that are upvoted are people talking about struggling or anything that just highlights the negatives of being in computer science, a software engineer, or just giving up. 

I know the market is hard currently, but not everything has to be negative. 

This is just my opinion from what I see, I wonder what people think of this.

Yeah yeah first world problems...

Okay so 4 years ago big healthcare corp bought the startup I was part of. For about 3ish of those years my crew functioned mostly autonomously from the big corp politics, but then, as they tend to do, the corp reorg'd and integrated me into the machine.

I really loath the bureaucracy and the process and the (poorly done) agile nonsense... despite that, my boss noticed very quickly that I am head-and-shoulders above his normal developers. To be fair, he's given me a really long leash compared to most people (so it's not all that bad, just kinda boring)

Anyway... it took me a bit but I found a startup that was willing to give me a small bump in pay over my big corp salary (going from 145 at corp to 155k at startup)

So I gave my two weeks notice 2 days ago. Big corp boss calls me up and asks what he can do to keep me (he realizes that a lot of shit hits the fan if I leave).

I throw out what I thought was a big number, 190k, and he tells me he's gunna go write an offer.

So... WTF. That's a lot of fucking money, but then I have to wallow away in the bureaucratic swamp (to be fair I spend half my day playing factorio... so whatever)

Anyway.... I have a feeling I know what people are gunna say "oh money doesn't buy happiness" and whatever... it's just hard to think like that when you're staring down the barrel dollar signs.

Accepted an offer at a startup, but current employer (big corp) wants to throw money at me.

I accidentally deposited 100k into my Robinhood when I meant to put 1k. I tried canceling on Robinhood but there was no option and even contacted support. Well at that point I just accepted the transfer would probably get reversed and rejected by Chase and l'd pay a nfs fee and probably get my account restricted by Robinhood but Chase ended letting the transaction go through (I didn't expect this since l'm 18 and only had a 1k balance). So now I have a -99k balance and will probably pay an overdraft fee. I can transfer the funds back within 2 weeks since that's when the Robinhood transfer settles and lets me withdraw but will I be charged interest or are there any other fees that may be associated? Or even worse can I possibly get shut down and get sent to collections?


I tried calling Chase today but the automated bot said their customer service office is closed so im just trying to find out info.

I’m really struggling with something and could use some outside perspective. A few months ago, I was fired from a job that I was deeply invested in, and the way it happened was pretty brutal. I haven’t been able to shake it since- it’s on my mind constantly, and no matter how much time passes, I feel stuck in a loop of regret, embarrassment, and frustration.

Some Background:

I worked at my previous company (large F500 corporation) for several years and was really committed to it. I built strong relationships, worked hard, and genuinely believed I had a future there. The culture was a little rough, but I was excited about growing with the company and felt that things could be fixed. But looking back, there were some major red flags - broken promises, questionable leadership decisions, and a general sense that employees were seen as replaceable.

Eventually, things started to unravel for me. I had frustrations (like many people do), and I expressed them in ways that, in hindsight, I wish I had handled differently. But I never acted maliciously, and I genuinely cared about the company and the people I worked with. Then, out of nowhere, I was called into an HR meeting and fired. No warning, no prior conversations, just - boom - done.

To make it worse, they announced my termination on a company-wide call (~80 people), explicitly citing “unprofessional conduct.” From there, rumors spread, and I know for a fact that exaggerated or even outright false details were circulating. I wasn’t given a chance to defend myself, and the way it was handled felt completely impersonal and unfair.

Where I Am Now:

•	I started a new job, but I feel no connection to it. The culture is totally different, I don’t feel like I fit in, and I’m struggling to care about the work. I took it out of necessity, but I’m already feeling like I need to start looking elsewhere.

•	I keep replaying the conversation where I was fired, over and over again. It’s the first thing I think about when I wake up and follows me throughout the day. I don’t know how to shut it off.

•	The worst part is the relationships I lost. Some of the people I worked with were older, more formal, and in leadership positions. I had good relationships with them before, but now I feel like they all see me as a failure, and I don’t think I can ever reach out to them again. That loss of respect and reputation haunts me.

•	I know logically that I need to move forward, but emotionally, I just feel stuck.

What I’m Looking For:

For those who began investing at or after 30 years old.. how is it working out?

I've been working at my firm for over 4 years now and I still havent gotten a promotion from the entry level role I joined at. I've been told I am doing my job well but when it comes to the promotion/raise cycle there's always some excuse or the other that is thrown at my face. What's funny is that even though they hired more senior engineers a few months back while blocking the promotion of almost all junior engineers, some of the juniors (including me), are lifting way more weight than a couple of the "seniors" (some are really good though). This was a huge slap in the face and was the straw that broke the camel's back.

I make about $100k in a LCOL. I don't have a job lined up and am not interview ready but I was thinking of giving an ultimatum to my manager this week and wanted some tips on how to navigate this situation about a promotion and a raise in parallel. Because I do enjoy my work and the lack of promotions (and perhaps pay too) is my only gripe. How do I go about this in the most diplomatic fashion that won't end up biting me in the ass? Do I find a job and then quit? Or should I just stop working so that they can either put me on PiP or get rid of me in the next layoff so that I can atleast get severance?

And I mean this from an income perspective.  At least in my area (Austin, TX), the issue is that although your wealth increases on paper, it's all in appreciation.  The income is terrible.  So I'm a BMW on paper, but in reality I'm driving a RAV4.  But at the same time, the damn tax implications and 1031 exchange make you feel trapped in real estate for life once you're in it.  I'd love to just sell my properties and enjoy life, but the taxes....

It's a good investment, but it's not a good source of income. I was trying to turn it into an income stream so I didn't have to work. Now, I do have positive cash flow, but nothing that could replace a job. And the issue became that I hit a wall pretty quickly where I couldn't get a loan to expand because my income was so low. So I'm sitting here with a net worth of a couple million dollars, yet I can't get a loan to buy another property because according to the bank I'm poor.

1.5 YOE. Hadn't taken any time off since I started working in 2023 as a new grad. Last year I started experiencing what I can only describe as "neurological decline", felt like I had dementia because I was constantly forgetting things, making small and large mistakes, chronic fatigue that made it very difficult to work. I nearly got put on PIP because I made a couple of big mistakes.

Finally I decided that I needed a break because I was about to crack, so I took two weeks of PTO to just sit at home and relax. I even found the energy and concentration to do leetcode, because I want to move on to a better company soon, and it's going well.

On Monday I return to work (and also five day RTO which started while I was away). But while my mental health is overall slightly better, I feel like my motivation is even worse. The only thing that remotely matters to me right now is leetcode. The idea of struggling through my tasks as I try to navigate some unfamiliar repo, or sit in on standups for my relatively new team and try and understand 10% of what's being said, sounds like torture.

How do I make work as tolerable as possible without getting fired? Until I can get an offer somewhere else (which could take several months)

Took my first vacation in two years since I was so burned out. Now my vacation's almost over and I have even less motivation to work

When we do something atypical of ourselves, our brain dislikes this and you feel negative emotions. Our brains want us to remain as we are, **and this is because we have proven to be able to survive in our current state.**

And this happens because your brain is only concerned about your survival, and your “current self” is surviving just fine, you are surviving well in your current state right now.

So your brain doesn’t see the need to change, it wants you to remain as the person that you are right now, because you’ve established that you can survive in your current state.

But this is much harder than it sounds, because the only way to view yourself as a hard worker, is by working hard, and you know deep down if you are trying as hard as you can.

But if you are working very hard, very diligently, and you are genuinely trying your best, then productivity and entrepreneurship will become easy for you.

I learned why our brain makes entrepreneurship hard

As one of my jobs has been getting somewhat toxic recently, I have started thinking about what impact such a situation can have on one's personality. On the one hand, there's that David Goggins's-like mentality of getting tougher when encountering challenge, on the other hand, there's that idea that even if you keep learning to handle unpleasant situations and people, the stress is gnawing you from inside and will result in mental and physical problems. So, I would appreciate your thoughts and sharing experience on that matter. 

Does being in a toxic workplace make you stronger or destroys you?

Nothing motivational here and I am mentioning ONE of the reasons, not THE reason. 

Just sick of the employee mindest. 

- Give me money even if I don't work as much. 
- Give me bonuses even if I haven't done anything special.
- My salary will get me the latest Apple watch.
- ooooh can't wait for Saturday.
- If I keep moving my cursor they will think I am active and working remotely.
- My boss is toxic, colleagues are toxic, investors are toxic. Everyone but me is toxic. 
- ookh just 2 hours left to go home. 

Just Pathetic! 

Because of shit like this, employers treat folks like children as well: 
- Strict office timings 
- Mandatory 2 days work from office 
- Attendance (wtfffff) 
- gifts on festivals 

Couldn't handle that shit. Switched jobs every year trying to find a place where adults build something together and behave like adults. 

Apparently that just doesn't exist. 

Fuck it then, I will do it myself. NOT because: 
- I wanna be called a boss
- Wanna write Founder and CEO on LinkedIn (I just write GTM cz that's actually all I do and my developer friends help me) 
- Wanna be a millionare - if I help enough folks, I just might become one. But I don't care (at least right now, might change). 

Just wanna be an ADULT and be treated like one. 

PS. Did find a common problem in all jobs that I was at and instead of joining another one, started working on the problem (it's related to SaaS product management). 

Edit: I have worked in sales, customer success, marketing, and product in tech (for 7 years now). Met incredible techies along the way and building something with them. Don't think I learnt anything new in the past year or so. 

I started a business to become a complete 'adult' 



M/35, living in a VVHCOL area.  NW $950k (550k in real estate, 400 investments.). Live in a house hack so mortgage negligible.  I have one kid who’s 1 years old, hopefully another on the way, single income family, wife stays home, plenty of baby help from family.  Current salary target is 235 with company stock (large stable tech company),  in actuality it’s been about 190.  I just got an offer with a target of 305 (240 base) (massive corporation, stabile but slow growing.). 60k base increase.  And a larger long term incentive, plus title progression.  BUT, it requires being in person 4 days, half hour commute.  Tried (unsuccessfully) for current company to give me a counter. 

I have been a primarily remote worker for about the last 10 years of my 15 year career, it’s what I know and I’ve learned how to be productive.  It allows me to see my kid, wife, all the time.  The small things like stepping outside to my porch on a nice sunny day taking a break from work, no need for water cooler talk, I can even work outside of my home on trips, And occasionally play a little hooky to enjoy my hobbies- but I always get my shit done.  I’m flexible in when I work (aside from scheduled meetings).  Generally being in a comfortable environment I control has been amazing.  The idea of being in a stuffy corporate office park is really really un-appealing to me, Frankly rather depressing.  But the money is really really good and I feel I would be missing a major career advancement opportunity that could set my family up for life potentially.  

Is it time to grow up and return to office? There’s some aspects of remote work that are becoming tricky (managing distractions with new child) , and I have a major procrastination habit that leads me to working late nights a few times a week (as opposed to getting it done during business hours. ). I am really struggling with this one and could use help from the Reddit world !
