Yes, it's a loss leader to entice you to follow up with investing in their products but the high level advice will be sound. I got free consult from Wells Fargo knowing I would not be using their products and it did help me refine a couple items but mostly provided the reassurance that I know what I'm doing on my own.

I got over-leveled imo, and surprisingly it's the best thing that happened to my personal and career growth. Many of us engineers are too modest and insecure. We think "I'll be ready for this next year", and next year we say the same thing.

Check to see what your home insurance policy says.

Call your state's Department of Insurance and file a complaint. That's your best course of action.

Not a bad decision. You’ll get used to the noise, and besides that you’ll like the neighborhood. Lighten up and don’t forget to enjoy your life. 

Time is the most valuable thing you have, so I’d look at it from a time allocation perspective. If your work is manageable and your kids are young, you like your job and your making memories and participating in the things outside of work that you want to, then perhaps keep working.

They are going to try to sell you financial products that earn them a commission.

Lately I've struggled more with productivity being very pregnant. The simple thing that has helped me the most is writing out a to do list of smaller tasks on a post it and crossing them out as I go.

Back from Nashville and the SEC Basketball Tournament.  Our team won it all.  I can't recall a time I've seen my son express such unadulterated joy.  Truly an amazing and memorable weekend.  

What felt expensive at the time now feels like a bargain.

Financial situation at your current company is a perfectly valid thing to say even if it hypothetically weakens your negotiating position. Negotiating positions are generally weak right now anyway.

What industry are you in?

Yea, that is normal, however calling him an advisor is wrong, he is a salesman.

He gets a percentage of every transaction you make for products that you sign over him.
So he will of course be pressuring you to sign as much stuff as possible, with as high as possible costs.

Also most often these salesmen if they are affiliated with a specific company as in your case TIAA, they are not allowed to talk or  recommend you products from other companies.

Lots of people get wealthy without ever having to show their face or get into verbal contact.

But if you are going to be people-facing then you absolutely need to develop those social skills and confidence.

Early retirement is not for everyone.  Maybe it is not for you and you should just keep working.  I would not try to change who you are and do something you don’t want to do.

Just be honest, tell them the government sector is extremely uncertain and unstable right now and you are looking for a long-term job to grow in. Anyone who has seen the news in the past 60 days will understand.

  
A single time short job stint on your resume isn't an issue. It when you have multiple 3-9 month (non-contract) positions is when recruiters start to care.

Starting a company (or even putting yourself in certain roles) will push you and stretch your skillset and comfort in certain situations.

You may be incredibly uncomfortable in these situations but you will grow, and become more acclimated to these situations.

I'm not productive all day and I make it so I don't have to be. I do 2-3 tickets simultaneously and finish ahead of schedule. Then hold it back and control when I open pull requests. All my work appears consistent and is done at regular intervals where possible. Work when you have motivation and space the results out to cover for the time you don't.

Maximizing productivity is kind of pointless when your boss tells you they have 2+ years of work planned out for the team. There's no way to get ahead of it all and there's no reward for finishing any work early. Just more work.

I basically do my entire workday before "lunch". I start at 6am, work straight through til 1pm, grab a light lunch, and my last 90 minutes from 1:30 til about 3:00 are usually more lightweight work like answering emails or replying to Slack messages or commenting on Google docs. Once I eat my mid-day meal I also observe, as you do, my energy flagging.

(Also, I feel compelled to point out, this is not an aggro Productivity Bro schedule, this is 99% because I have to pick up my kids when school's out, and this is the only way to orient my workday to make that possible. The fact that this is also the schedule I've found most productive for me over my lifetime is probably coincidence.)

Do you live in a very LCOL area? That seems super low for a manger. Maybe try to focus your skillset? I have an undergrad in history but have been doing general analyst work for a few years now and just broke 100k.

Few things going on here. 

* Don't worry about your degree at this point in your career. Your experience should speak for itself. Also, getting an MBA is a LAST RESORT thing. Someone else mentioned it, but they don't have a good return on investment unless you get a good scholarship.
* Stop doing ecommerce work for small businesses, they don't have the money to pay you what you want.
* Focus on one thing, whether that is customer service or supply chain management or whatever. You need to specialize in something to get a higher position/pay. 
* Look for medium to large sized businesses (50-1000+ employees) that is looking for a manager/director level role. There's lots of CPG companies looking for supply chain managers or SaaS companies looking for customer service directors. These are the jobs that will pay a lot of money ($80K+). A lot of these are remote as well.
* Where are you applying for jobs? What websites? I use a combination of all the job search websites (Indeed, LinkedIn, etc.) and also go directly to websites of companies I am interested in. How many jobs have you applied to? It may take 500-1000 apps before getting a job, maybe more in this market.

There's nothing in your description that tells me you can't get a better paying job, so hopefully this all helps.

31 year old wife has a bachelor's in computer engineering. She took some bad decisions in career and stuck to some non technical work for 5 years. Now she's been laid off and is finding it hard to get any jobs as she lacks any skills. She can't code or anything. She's been jobless for 3 years now and she's getting mentally affected by staying at home.  What steps can she take at this point to land a job in the coming months? Any advice would be much appreciated but advice specific to Indian job market would be even better.

l inherited my grandmothers house in 2015. When she passed away, her death certificate was sent to the County and the house was put into my name. I began paying a mortgage on the house thereafter. I refinanced the house in 2022, with no issues. In February of this year, I received a letter in the mail from the County stating that I owed them 18,000 in back taxes. I was confused because there is an escrow account on my mortgage. The bank paid it, then told me that I was paying a discounted rate from 2021 through 2024 and that my mortgage will go from 1080 to 3100 per month until it's paid off!!! The new payment starts in May they said. That will crush me. Do I hire an attorney, look to sale it or where do you go from here?

Gambling addiction ruined FIRE

The credit union we have our auto loan through recently got bought out by another company, and over the course of the last few months have been notifying us of the next steps, login information, and resources to aid with the transition to the new company. The transfer of accounts and use of the new system went into full effect March 1st. When we log in to view our accounts with the new system, they show all the same accounts that existed with the previous company; mainly an unused savings account, checking account, and credit card with $0 balance. The only active account we regularly used was for an auto loan we took for my truck about 2.5 years ago. 
Last night, we got a letter addressed from the previous credit union. Inside it was the title to my truck, and a letter stating “Congratulations on paying off your auto loan!” There is no lien indicated on the title, and the back has the transfer to me from the credit union stating it’s been paid in full and owned by me. 
I don’t know what to do now. Part of me says “Yes! No more payments!”. But another part of me is saying to do the brutally honest thing and send the title to the new credit union and keep paying on my loan. 
Other possibly relevant information…
The entire loan amount was for about $16k, and I only owed about $7k before the transfer/buyout. Both the old and new credit union are out of state from us out west. We now live in Texas.

Edit: This was all great advice and appreciate the input! I think this falls into the category of an unsecured loan now and will still make the payments like normal to avoid any hassle or hit to my credit. Just not going to tell them I have the title.

I'm a Computer Engineering grad, graduated in 2023. My colleagues got jobs back then but I had obligatory military service and just finished in 3 months ago.

I have applied to countless amount of jobs, all of them are entry level or require > 2 experience (more on that at the end).

I'm getting either one of the following:

1- No response at all.

2- "Unfortunately, we decided not to move forward with your application".

3- I get a coding challenge, I pass it, then I get no response or rejection.


And, for the rejections, I haven't got a single feedback on the rejection reason.


The vast majority of the job postings I see are either seniors or unpaid internships at startup companies with 2-4 employees (sometimes they will pay for full-time jobs, but about half the price of the market prices that I may herd cattle instead). Few junior positions I see and that's the ones I apply for, only to find out every listing has +200 application at the very minimum, and about 15-25% of them are seniors applying for junior positions (stat shown by LinkedIn premium).


I apply for entry/junior web positions (full stack, backend, or frontend), and I have experience on some certain full stack languages/frameworks but that's only coming from my personal projects, since I can't get a real job that will count as work experience. I do get the job done, and made some few gigs on freelancing before, but never worked under a senior before within a "company".


I have been seriously thinking about shifting careers. I honestly don't know what to do at this stage. 
I keep thinking that I should dive deeper and learn more languages/frameworks, but then I see most job postings require minimum +5 years experience and the problem is not about languages or frameworks rather experience and there is a great chance that I'd be just wasting time. If I shift career, I honestly regret the amount of effort and time I have wasted on getting my degree. Why this is a lose-lose situation?

i financed it with a 10-year interest-only loan at 5%. with all the tax breaks, my monthly costs (including high maintenance fees) are still lower than renting—for now. my plan was to sell in a few years once the market stabilizes, but between taxes and broker fees, i’m almost certain to take a loss.

My partner and I met with a financial advisor from TIAA yesterday for an initial consultation. We currently do not have any investments with TIAA. We asked if he would be able to look at all of our finances and tell us if we're putting our money in the right buckets. He said yes. I then asked what the fee was for this analysis and he said no cost. I asked if there was an obligation to open some investments with with TIAA and he said no.

In January 3 pipes busted in my home causing major damage to my homes foundation to where contractor says it's not liveable. State Farm denied the claim as their loophole states if water goes into the ground they are not responsible.  This makes no sense to me I've been with them over 40 years never filed a claim. How can they deny  my claim  I'm pretty much homeless now as I don't have the money to fix I thought that's why we pay gir insurance???

I never thought I'd be in this position but I am comfortably "FI" and yet I cannot get myself to pull the trigger on the "RE" part.  I have self-reflected on this apprehension for the past 6 months, and while I still don't have all the answers (that's where you come in!), I think a big mental block for me is the amorphous concept of 'opportunity cost' - by retiring early, what am I giving up (forever...)?  In my mind, this ranges from ego-centric things like big titles and peer admiration, to quality of life novelties that would come from working another 10+ years and piling up a very-fat retirement.  

To add context, I am a financial professional, early 40s, with a wife and a couple young dependents.  I would consider us as chubby - not fat - at this point.  $6.2MM NW, minus house and 529s leaves about $5MM investable assets.  Theoretically this produces $200k/year at the 4% rule.  I've tracked expenses since 2015 and feel very comfortable that our 'base' spend is about $125k (including healthcare) and then I model another $40k in for QoL improvements (expensive hobbies, better travel, etc).  Either way - call it $165k spend.  That's 3.3%, but we've also got some modest side hustles that produce about $30k-50k/year, so really we're in the 2.5% range.    
  
The point is - the math supports RE now, but I simply cannot get over my own ego (?) to actually pull the trigger.  In my mind I think "well if I am FI now, and layer on 10 more years of lucrative pay, I'd be able to \[buy this\]/\[do that\]/\[experience that\]/\[impress them\].  I've been blessed with a career that allows surprisingly good work/life balance, so I don't feel like RE will drastically improve things on that front - I have great family relationships as it is.  This is mostly my own Type-A personality being unwilling to hang it up.

Struggling with the Opportunity Cost of RE

Admittedly I’m an early riser and I’m most productive between 7 and 11 AM. After lunch my motivation plummets and have a hard time focusing to get much done. 

Some days I’m good with this and will just “chill out” but others are frustrating when I know I have work I need to get working on. 

Anyone else struggle with something similar and how do you go about structuring your day to maximize productivity?

So I recently got an offer at Microsoft for an SDE II job. I didn’t think I would get it since I only  have 1.5 YoE, so I’m pretty surprised.

Even more surprising, they placed me at level 62  (SDE II consist of levels 61-62).

Now I’m worried that I was over leveled, and won’t be able to meet their expectations given my limited experience. I’ve looked up other people at this level, and a lot of them have 5+ years of experience

Does anyone have any suggestions or similar experience to this? This is like one of my dream jobs and I’m worried I’m going to screw it up now



Stress over being leveled too high?

I graduated with a CS degree back in December 2022 and currently work for a company that supports a government agency as a Systems Analyst (not a dev role). This is my second job - I worked at my first job for 1.5 years, until October 2024. 

The government agency in question got hit with massive budget cuts and is currently laying off a lot of people. 

My manager said that our revenue is already on a decline. He also said that there our jobs are "not at risk", but I don't really believe him. 

I've already started applying to other
jobs - What should I tell the recruiters about why I'm already looking for a different job? I've only been at my current job for around 6 months, and I really can't use "looking for growth" as an excuse anymore. 

Should I tell them that I might get laid off soon?

I (32M) just can’t get out of the 50k range. I don’t think it helps I have my degree in fine arts, but everything else I have skill wise is self taught. E-commerce, product management, inventory, photography, and logistics. I have enough experience to get in the door, but not enough to convert to a higher salary. I’ve been a manager in 3 different positions in the last 4 years. 

I also feel like I interview well. I’m almost never nervous and can answer questions with detail and examples.
